@zivah: In June 2005, I did have the kind where the bone was actually broken, a sliver of bone was extracted, a rod was inserted in the break to set it, and the entire alignment of my foot was changed. I thought the whole thing was amazingly cool. My doctor was great.

It's been working great so far. I hope to God it continues to.

@tscheese: Well, you can't just get the bunion surgery (the old one) which just shaves a piece off the bone. You actually need to break the bones and reset the foot in order for it to stick. Otherwise the rate of relapse for those old surgeries is like 50%.

The best new surgery, or so I'm told, is the one where they actually remove a (little used) joint in the foot. This prevents relapse completely.

@talk2tehhand: Wow, yes. Plantar fasciitis is the worst. Mine is worse when I wear flats, weirdly, though sneakers = the best. I am lucky that I can wear them almost all the time at work.

P.S. One really good therapy for it, y'all, is to very slowly roll a tennis ball under your arch (exerting some pressure) to release the fascia's tension. It feels really really good.

@zivah: DUDE. Me too. I have never been much of a heel-wearer, but lo and behold, my left foot became too sore to walk on a few years ago, and I had to have surgery.

If I wanted all the bones in my left foot to be properly aligned, and get rid of the deformity, the doctor would have to break and reset every. single. one. of my metatarsals. Do not want. I'm hoping that the bunion surgery will be enough.

@talk2tehhand: I had bunion surgery a few years ago (not really my fault, the bones in my feet all actually rotate 180 degrees like twisty straws. Doc said it was genetic.) I also wear a size 12 shoe, which compounds matters considerably, because I will have to wear roomy, supportive, substantial shoes for the rest of my life. No heels over 2", either, not even for special occasions. They just hurt too much.

Dansko makes some sandals that are not completely dorky and kind of presentable. They might be able to liberate you from sneakers?

Bunions suuuuuuuuck. My foot is WAYYY better now that the surgery is over and done, but it literally took the better part of a year for the swelling to completely dissipate, and the titanium rod in my first metacarpal? It hurts whenever it rains.

Ladies, most of you have perfectly good feet that are not congenitally deformed. Please don't ruin them. I would kill for feet that had worked right from day one. Please be nice to your feet.

@Lady Skittlehattington's Publicist: Ha, I would too if I didn't have to wear sneakers year round because my feet are so fucked up. Take care of your feet. Plantar fasciitis is a bitch of an injury, and it's common as hell. They used to call it heel spurs until they found out it's really a torn ligament between your toes and heel with pain that manifests itself directly in the heel. So wear cute shoes, but make sure the sole is not hard (like a wooden sole) but flexes with your foot a bit. Also, make sure you wear shoes with some kind of an arch support. Also, try to wear shoes that fit well, don't try to squeeze your foot in too small a shoe just because you find a good sale for size 6 when you wear a 7. This practice will give you bunions - which sounds innocent enough - but they are actually an insidious affliction which makes actual bone grow around the end of your foot and misshapes your foot to the point where you may need surgery, or at least a bigger shoe, and it's painful to walk on. But you walk on them anyway because you have to get around, but it hurts and it SUCKS.

I actually thought some of the "bad" dresses were better than some of the "good" ones. Not that that means much. But, for example, in the case of Ms. Cuomo I don't find "brave" to be synonymous with "stylish". Just sayin'.
