Maybe I'M ignorant--how many people (teens, adults) simply DON'T UNDERSTAND the link between STI's, kids, and unsafe sex? In some particularly aggressive abstinence-only classes instructors will spread medical bullshit (condoms fail 25% of the time, etc.) but what's the excuse for people who understand?

That's when sex reduces us to animals--can you imagine people being so flippant/blind about something else (especially in the age of the internet)...

And that's what I'm saying--it's FUCKED UP that people who nevertheless understand the link between condoms and STI's--regardless of whether their old sex-ed class made a strong impression--make such irresponsible decisions about their health. I am DEFINITELY including guys here, who can walk away from the kids and on some level the consequences of STIs (it seems women contract them more easily?).

It is fucked up and maddening and SAD that unless you are banging down people's doors and saying, "USE A CONDOM! USE A CONDOM! GET TESTED! USE A CONDOM!..." many people won't...because so much of sexual behavior (for some) just seems absolved by impulse/the notion that "we didn't plan to have sex....so we didn't talk about condoms".

Considering the weight of the consequences (the STI's, the kid you don't want/can't care for....and the abortion you don't want to get either)....how can people who understand even the most basic link be so flippant?

Bush's views on birth control and sex-ed are at the top of my shit list, but can you imagine if we needed so much hand-holding and "in your face" reminders for something else?

Fuck it, I know, it'd be worth it, but that's not coming any time soon--an American society that will embrace the need for contraception/planning as a whole, or individuals/groups that just let it slip by or resent the input....

Yeah, yeah, add the problem of "what if people are too high or stoned to use condoms?" in there.
