Everybody was cheering on these girls. The only criticism I had, as well as those with me, were the patronizing "info sections" interspersed in the doc, with stuff such as "all young girls think they are fat, girls are at risk for eating disorders, etc etc etc" which anybody who EVER WAS or IS or HAD or GREW UP WITH a teenager girl is already sorely aware of.
The info-bits were also done "zine" cutter style, and seemed way too MTVish for the really heartfelt doc.

I have to say, hearing about all you being teary has made me teary...Anyway, just wanted to say one thing about the girls of color and class background issue. Misty, who we focused on, definitely comes from an unusual background, sent from her group home after coming from a lockdown facility. Her band, who are one of the primary focuses of the movie, are all girls of color except for one (7 members total). And the camp is usually about %40 girls of color. They actually encourage all genres of music, so there isn't really the issue of rock being alienating so much. For instance, the aforementioned band gathered under the Hip Hop banner during band formation. Anyway, I hear people's concerns, and we didn't plan for the story to steer away from a more diverse slate of girls at the focus, we just kinda followed where interesting stories were developing. That having been said, Misty is half-Indonesian and Laura is Korean (two of the main four girls), and Laura is very outspoken about race in the movie. Thanks for making my day y'all! Almost everyone involved is a volunteer. And they make a very concerted effort to have a lot of women and girls of color, many of the campers ARE inner city kids and in the foster care system. Plus you don't have to play rock music, folk, metal, disco, techno, and hip hop are all represented. Keep in mind this movie (while awesome) is the filmmaker's vision of camp. And that it's all in the edit......

Also, though you only see her for a split second in the trailer, my boyfriend's goddaughter plays a major role in the doc. She is, as the child of a black man and a Chicana, a proud POC.

But I get the feeling that with more publicity and outreach that'll change a little. Plus they're increasingly careful not to selll the kids a normative "you must ROCK because THAT is what makes you good" line.

These also seem to have sparked a lot of similar things for kids (girls and boys both), and a recognition that you can motivate and inspire kids just by teaching them fun stuff about their own abilities -- the sad part is that public schools have given up on being able to do that with their own art/music programs, so now it all has to get done privately like this. It's terrific what you can do, though, just by letting kids try things, whether it's playing music or building bikes or whatever.
