Really? That was the term specified in the Society of Professional Journalists Guidelines for talking about this organization:

Avoid using word combinations such as "Islamic terrorist" or "Muslim extremist" that are misleading because they link whole religions to criminal activity. Be specific: Alternate choices, depending on context, include "Al Qaeda terrorists" or, to describe the broad range of groups involved in Islamic politics, "political Islamists." Do not use religious characterizations as shorthand when geographic, political, socioeconomic or other distinctions might be more accurate.

Some of the guidelines are unnecessary or too PC, but this makes sense since it is a political/military organization

Political Islamism regards feminists as the enemy, whether feminists want them to or not.

We would have done a lot more for poor and oppressed people everywhere (including the United States) if we didn't spend so fucking much on the military. We spend more than the rest of the world COMBINED, and that's a fact.

We spend so fucking much on the military because we're responsible for defending most of the nations on the planet. We got into this unwanted role during the cold war, and our European allies are happy to let us continue to foot the bill for their defense. If they paid for their own defense (which they are perfectly capable of doing) we could spend a lot more on our own social programs.

But paying attention to the health and well being of women in the third world doesn't have to involve government sponsored programs - women who are living in societies that have 'cultural practices' like forced early marriages and FGM (whether they're Islamist or not) could be helped by an NGO sponsored underground railroad to get them out of those countries. Something like the 'lost boys of the Sudan' program.

That kind of thing would have to be done without the help of the government, since our state department would oppose it.

Our allies in Saudi Arabia are responsible for exporting extremist literature and their anti-woman views worldwide. Publicizing the problems that result from this alliance, and criticizing all institutions that accept bribes from these extremists could help diminish their influence in the USA.

Our government (republican and democrat) is part of the problem. If we're looking for state-sponsored solutions, we're not going to get them.

I used to have a subscription to Ms., and yes, I read those articles. They did bring some of the abuses of the Taliban to light. But after 9/11, criticism of political Islamism and it's abuses faded.

There's one group of people who call themselves feminists who do good work in third-world countries.

There's another group of people who call themselves feminists who fight for women's rights by making catty comments about right wing women.

The latter group is a lot bigger than the former. Like, exponentially. That might explain why feminists haven't accomplished much in the third world.

There is a fair amount of evidence that shows that the political movement, Islamism, is a direct attack against the philosophies of feminism. There is a genuine ideological confrontation going on here.

Feminism's response to this confrontation has been less than impressive. Their accomplishments, even less so.

Oh, and FGM is a cultural practice, not a religious one. Many Christian African girls are subject to it the same as Muslim African girls. In the Muslim countries with the most brutally misogynistic regimes (Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan under the Taliban, etc) female genital mutilation was and is unheard of. Why? Because, again, it's CULTURAL, not RELIGIOUS.

I majored in philosophy, so I got used to pulling the ideas I liked out of a crazy-ass matrix. I love her ideas about individual responsibility, recognition of innovation, and the fact that success isn't something to be ashamed of. But there is some truth to Jon Stewart's suggestion that anyone who reads her is an asshole for at least a month afterwards. I'll never understand how women can be so unsympathetic to other women. It's as if they've never had anything, however minor, happen to them, to anyone they know - never even been nervous walking alone at night.
