That said, my mom, who is an accountant and significantly better at math overall than my dad, is slower with mental math than he is. She's more concerned with getting it right, I think, and he's more concerned with getting it out.

I think what killed it for me was geometry. I was ahead of my class through algebra. Geometry didn't hold my interest enough to put any work into it. My first college math class was a history of mathematical systems through the ages, and that was pretty damn cool.

Some people just can, but the rest of us need to learn how, and a lot of that stuff, I either didn't learn or I forgot. It's too bad so little of it was testing the kind of math I use all the time. Pretty much everyone agrees that the GRE in math is useless. For people going into math-based fields, it's too easy. For everyone else, it's too hard.

I expect some women really just can't do basic math, but my own completely biased observation is that women I have known who say that they can't do math could really do it if they felt like it, but for a variety of reasons, they don't. I know one woman for sure who has cultivated math stupidity as part of an overall "be feminine and unthreatening to men" campaign that I'm not sure she knows she's running, and I doubt she's the only one out there.

It's a mindset. Do you say you can't, or do you say--to yourself and others--that you could learn but haven't yet? I hate when women, especially, sell themselves short.

Adding, subtracting, multiplication, division and a world of other basic functions are mainly reliant on a person's memory, specifically their active working memory, and are not indicative of their ability to learn more complex math, like algebra, geometry and even calculus.

As a special education teacher I have frequently encountered students who think they are bad at math because they can't remember their times tables-something that I myself have trouble with as well-however, when given the opportunity to learn math skills without relying on their memories they excel. Memory does not equal intelligence.

I suck at math. But I think part of that is I'm not good at algebra and that kind of stuff, so when I hit high school and struggled with it (I was an honor roll kind of girl until I met high school math), the humiliation and anxiety over my inability to understand complex math colored my opinion of the subject for life.

But, I excelled in writing, reading comprehension, history, etc. Why doesn't the Daily Mail talk about that (because aren't women generally better than men on those subjects?).
