She has just capitalized very well on the trend of pop culture eating itself before it is even done cooking. A lot of writers would gladly remain obsolete rather than resort to her form of 'writing'.

Her success makes it harder for new voices because she is just another writer who takes something out of a closet, puts enough paint on it to disguise the origin, and proceeds to take advantage of the many who will respond with the desired "It's Fresh, new, and wonderfully original". Critics have jumped on the bandwagon. "THIS is what unique looks like!" they say.

The fact that she is obviously a female and used to be a stripper is really unimportant. She could be a he, could have lived in Orange County splendor, studied under the greatest writing teachers of our time and I'd still be crying "Hack" if the material was the same as it has been. That's just how I feel about it.

I think Diablo Cody is awesome - she can write, she's not some Hollywood hack, and she stands out as a creative individual (who just so happens to be a woman). She hasn't let her newfound fame change who she is and I think that's cool. She deserves her Oscar and it pisses me off that people would hate on her not because they didn't like Juno, but because of her offkilt fashion sense and her stripper past. This is my point--is she overrated? Perhaps a little. The dialog in Juno could be kind of self-aware grating.

I am glad she's doing well. My point is this--what happens when other (female) writers or directors with less interesting backstories but equal talent are overlooked? (Alot of people have mentioned Nancy Oliver...also a "former stripper"...and Tamara Jenkins...good points.)

If I was a female screenwriter, I'd resent her a little and even consider her a bit of a poseur(and perhaps, being disingenuous...picking the shoes...then rejecting them...I guess that's not her fault, though, esp. if she didn't know she'd be wearing 1 million dollars of shoes that could break or scuff on her feet)because she had a "gimmick" to exploit, and I didn't. That is the INDUSTRY'S fault for overlooking me. I get that.

Something nevertheless tells me I'd still be jealous and resent both the industry that laps her up, and the woman smart enough to use their attention for self-interest.

P.S. I will agree that the whole name-switch to "Diablo" is a little "punk" precious, but what the hell, if she prefers that to Brooke and Diablo suits her identity better, so be it.

Don't get me wrong -- I liked the movie and the acting was great for what was required of the actors, and really, except for Josh Brolin, not a whole lot was required of the actors. I just did not find it profound in any way, and you are talking to someone who gives out copies of "Blood Simple" and "Raising Arizona" as Christmas gifts. I think the Academy was simply rewarding the Coens for their body of work, much as they did for Scorsese last year.

But if you ask me, a "No Country for Old Men" backlash makes a fuck of a lot more sense to me than the Diablo Cody one that is raging on nonsensically.

There is a way to express your opinions without being ill-mannered.

Perhaps I am projecting my wishes for ALL of Hollywood to get some damn manners onto her, but I don't think my dislike for her rude behavior since she's won her Oscar means that I hate women.

You could be very correct on this. I remember hearing a small snippet of the story behind City of God and all that the producers went through to get it on the Oscar ballot a couple of YEARS after it was released. The Academy is a closed circuit. They make it very political and it's really starting to shine a bad light on them.

Diablo vs. Shoes: Is her stylist a hayseed? Her publicist? You'd think someone would clue her in on the annual Million Dollar Oscar Shoes. I don't think she had to rail against Weitzman so forcefully on her blog, though. It's not as if he's using her in his bid for global domination.

Satrapi vs. Rat: I loved both movies but I don't think "Persepolis" was Best Animated material. I really think it should have been Best Foreign but apparently there were a lot of issues with the foreign films this year-- ones that should have been shoe-ins didn't get in because of some stupid red tape.

Diablo vs. Other Nominated Women: Sarah Polley wouldn't get backlash. "The Savages" was probably too depressing for a lot of people. To me, at face value, it's yet another movie about issues-laden siblings teaming up for something. After "Slums," I was expecting something equally cool from Tamara Jenkins and I was disappointed that this was her follow-up. "Lars" was way too weird for a lot of people, I think.

@Artful Slinger: Barbra Streisand was not nominated for Best Director- one of Oscar's most vile snubs, as Yentl garnered five noms. I vaguely recall someone onstage sarcastically noting that the movie had apparently directed itself.

Coppola is only the third woman to even be nomimated for Best Director, and the first American woman.

In general I root for Diablo Cody, her hard-won success and her refusal to go mainstream Hollywood, but she made a big misstep (hee!) over Shoegate. Weitzman, who is extremely gracious in his congratulations and refusal to point fingers, does say that she was more involved in the design process than any million-dollar-shoe lady before her. He claims that she was even offered the choice of what size diamonds to use on the jeweled flowers- small, medium, or large- and she picked medium.

Unless he's lying, I find it hard to imagine that Cody would have missed the part where her shoes had REAL DIAMONDS on them. Which makes her subsequent MySpace "nobody asked me!" protestations a little disingenuous.

But hey, nobody's perfect- she still rocks.

As for the mysogynistic horror on the interwebs -- that quite frankly would have required multiple Valium for me to even show up at the Osars -- just reflects the age-old addage that women have a place, and that *place* is decided by the patriarchy. Any deviation from that and you're open for ridicule. Women pick up on it, and reflexively use it as a vent for their jealousy.

My hope is that Diablo keeps writing her original stuff and grows as a writer through all of this. If she saunters off to do rewrites of other's work because it creates less backlash, that would be a shame. She writes stories about GIRLS and that's what we need a lot more of.

The female who is interested in getting into the entertainment industry should work at her craft (be it writing, directing, producing, acting, sound work, costuming, whatever the fuck) to make sure that she is good at what she does. She and all other actors, actresses, directors, producers and writers should accept the accolades hopefully bestowed upon them with grace and humility. Basically, I want them to act human. I have been appalled by the Diablo Cody hate for months. She actually once went onto a Defamer comment thread and people were awful to her, telling her to get out and to fuck off, basically. And it was other women who were talking to her that way.

She wrote a great screenplay, she is an amazing success story, she won an Oscar.
