The response, written by SAFER's Nora Niedzielski-Eichner, does an excellent job at exposing how the tired rape denialism argument has been repackaged over and over again by the same set of "culture war"-fueling right-wing institutions and, specifically, MacDonald's connections to these institutions.

Not only is this denialism argument old and discredited, it is part of a larger effort by right-wing organizations such as the Manhattan Institute, the Heritage Foundation, the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) and the Independent Women's Forum to delegitimize and combat feminist successes on campuses nationwide, particularly the rise of women's/gender studies departments, rape crisis centers, and other anti-violence programming. This is a longstanding strategy bankrolled by the top right-wing foundations (Scaife, Olin and Bradley, among others) and implemented, in large part, through a great deal of media savvy and a suspect ability to place even the most discredited propaganda in the pages of respected news publications.

Even the most minor of fact-checking endeavors would reveal MacDonald's op-ed as not only dated, unoriginal and a complete rehash of numerous past efforts bankrolled by the same institutions, but also one that has been torn apart time and time again in a wide variety of forums. The Times owes its readers an explanation of how it is that think tanks such as the Manhattan Institute, with their old, discredited propaganda, have such access to their op-ed pages.

I love my Jezzies and I too, used to work at a domestic violence shelther and members of my family (and myself) have suffered from rape and/or other forms of sexual abuse. So by no means am I advocating that the prevalence of rape is low-I'm certain it's fairly high.

However, the original article just goes through the inconsistencies of using a study from the 80s as evidence of the practice, particularly given the ambiguity of the questions asked and that many of the women themselves said they hadn't been raped. The last two paragraphs are her opinion on why she thinks there is a so called over inflation of the numbers.

Now, I think that "rape" is too narrow a term to use and study, and that future studies (and programs) should also focus on sexual assault/abuse at all levels, not just penetration or completed and forced intercourse. A woman who has been attacked but was able to get away or for some reason or the other the rape did not occur (e.g. if it was an attempted date rape, someone walked in) that person needs just as much support.

I also do agree with the fact that part of the ambiguous questions were probably to get at the fact that a lot of women experience sexual assault, but don't categorize it as such-that in fact, there still continues to be a huge need to educate both men and women on what sexual assault/abuse is and that if a woman says "no" it means "no"; that both date and marital rape DO occur, at I'm sure, a very high frequency, and that if you are unable to give consent (e.g. too drunk/passed out-whatever) that is rape.

However, I do agree that basing programs/money off of one study from the 80s is wrong and that more studies need to be conducted to find a more current statistic (whether higher or lower) and things such as fear of speaking about an assault and/or education about what assault is, needs to be addressed.

So, it was her parents that were the fucktards, not the rest of the community, in this case. Took them over a decade to come around to the sad truth.

Anecdotal evidence, sadly, is all we can go on, when the basic data is ultimately flawed. That's one of the sad truths in gathering data on such an emotional topic.

In college, I was raped on in a house full of six witnesses (5 men, 1 women). I kept my mouth shut for a lot of stupid reasons, but mostly b/c of assholes like yourselves, who I knew would blame or implicate me. I said nothing for months about the rape.

Then all of a sudden, this rumor started about what had happened that night. The female witness, (whose mom drove me home at 2AM that night because I was too upset to drive home and didn't want to stay the night in that house) told me, that "nothing happened" and the guy didn't do anything wrong.

WTF?! To make it worse, she started a whispering (well, not very quietly) campaign about what a slut and Big Fucking Liar I was, that culminated in me spending an evening, sitting on the attic steps listening to a dozen people (at least 12 of whom I thought were my friends) joking about the incident and continuing to impugn that I was a slag.

And by the way, I never reported it, because 3 mos. later, what the fuck would have happened?

Oh, and guess what? I didn't report a rape that took place 2 years before when I was a sophomore in college. It happened after a date in my bedroom, who would believe me?

So I never told anyone because I was ashamed. So fuck off.

1) Freshman year, a girl I knew claimed she was raped at a fraternity party. Local police investigated, and found out she never even left her dorm that night. Gotta love key cards and phone calling codes. She wanted the attention. Filing a fraudulent police report will get you some attention alright.
2) Junior year, a buddy of mine was accused of raping a woman in our school's little forested glen. The fact that he was home eating dinner with his parents 30 miles away when said assault took place is kind of proof he didn't do it. She wanted the attention and sympathy as well.
3) One girl tried to ruin me by accusing me of it when I dared to go out with her friend and not her. Fortunately, her friends called her out on that BS before it got out of hand. I didn't even know she did it until I out of school, when I ran into her old dorm mate and she told me the whole story.

Sadly, the fourth incident I know of is true, and while she's gotten on with her life, I know it wasn't easy for her at the time. I haven't spoken to her in a decade, but I always admired her strength in getting past what her college ex did to her.

In a perfect world, sexual assault would be treated like the CRIME it is, not as something for victims to feel stigmatized by. (I mean, if my wallet was stolen, I wouldn't even have to question whether to report it, and I would feel pretty certain that people would believe and try to help me. Not so with rape.)

Sexual assault is, unfortunately, ghettoized as a "women's issue." This doesn't allow us to account for male victims (so men are very unlikely to come forward), and it prevents men from taking an active role in S.A. prevention.

It's...it's just sort of insane. I mean, really, the more I think about it, the less objectively sane - and I'm not even talking about it being disgusting or disturbing - this reaction is.

However, this woman believes that the "only" incidence of rape is violent stranger rape, which is fairly rare (but does happen and I can tell you that every large college campus has at least one of these a year). Most of the people who commit rape know the victim and I don't think that Heather would view this as rape.

in my case, the dude really didn't (initially) think it was "that big of a deal". i was drugged by someone else, he took me home, and took advantage of the situation. if he had been given a polygraph immediately, he might have passed. that doesn't mean he didn't assualt me. he did. he just needed to refine his definition of right and wrong a little bit, which is why i took the fucker to trial... because if he thought it was OK with me, he might do it to someone else. i didn't want him to go to jail, or even to be registered as a sex offender. just third degree sexual assault, please, so that he couldn't become an OB GYN like his daddy, when he had apparent self control issues. i believe that he now knows that that is definitely WRONG.

I tried to find support groups when I first moved to DC, and I've been to a couple, but they all were disbanded because there were too often only 3 of us in the group, so clearly we didn't merit 30 min. in a church basement on the county's dime. Prove that you're not a drunk slut who was asking for it anyway, prove that this upstanding member of the community did this to you, prove that you aren't doing this because of monetary incentive, prove that you didn't want to have sex because you were wearing a revealing top, ect. That's the real problem with society. There are a small number of men and women that are accused of rape who did not do it, but as others have stated and you seem to be proving is that this small number of people who say they were raped who were not make every victim of rape suspect. As a victim of molestation when I was a child, I had members of my community questioning the truth of my account. If that didn't prove to me that victims of sexual crimes are always seen as some how "wanting" it I don't know what will.

]]> <![CDATA[Conservative Critic: College Rape Statistics Are Overinflated]]> @rsr26: my problem with you is that you do not read the post and comments carefully but rather argue with straw women who you seem to have encountered or thought you encountered in real life. there was a way to make a decent point about the original study, and jessica basically made it -- what is the social science behind this, why hasn't there been another study in 30 years, and what other methodologies would be helpful. but instead, you chose to take the conversation in the direction of "women lie about rape" which was even worse than the point that the conservative Heather was making (these researchers are asserting rape where women do not claim it, also women are drunk sluts). it sounds like you have an axe to grind on this topic and as one of few males on a female oriented site who does this on many threads regarding rape, frankly it smacks of something a little deeper than simple devil's advocate and i don't buy it.
