You need that iron to make the temporary uterine lining that is then lost as menstrual blood. Therefore, if you start with 100% of the iron needed for normal blood, say 10% is used for menstrual blood, you are only at 90% of your iron needs (though these numbers are pretend). You'd need a few days and iron rich food to replenish your body's stock. Can someone explain this better than me?

Your doctor may be correct that low iron isn't what makes you feel crappy, but I doubt that menstruation has no affect on iron levels.

It's one thing to plan your period around a trip and it's another to get rid of them totally. Periods aren't just about reproducing, those monthly suckers also cleanse your system (there is no better cure for a yeast infection than to get your period soon after, for example).

I don't think women get periods more often than women did in older times as someone mentioned, it's just that we used to be pregnant more often so women had less periods. My personal preference would be to skip it sometimes, but not to eliminate it, so I do naturally worry/wonder about these new pills they're pushing on us.

I've read a lot about this due to the fact that I have excruciating endometriosis and will do anything to minimize my period. I used to be creeped out by it until I researched it, but there's really nothing wrong with it, and in fact, women didn't start getting their periods every month until sometime in the 20th century.
That said, there are definitely some birth control pills/shots/patches that creep me out, not because of how many periods you do or don't have, but because of some of the sketchy side effects I've heard about. If I'm going to skip a period, I'll do it with the placebos from the old tried and true oral contraceptives.
