While I may not understand her past decisions to "deny" an aspect of what others perceive as her background 100%, I think that it's great that she's coming around despite still making some really dumb comments in public (how she'll raise her child). The only lesson to be learned here is that she needs a better PR agent and some interviewing courses.

I LOOK like plenty of Indian girls Iknow, at least in facial structure and to some extent in skin tone;they actually eat Indian food on a regular basis, watch the movies, speak the tongue(s), take Indian dance lessons, etc. etc. They have grown up in households that are "American" but simultaneously and distinctly Indian.

If she hasn't--why does she have to own up to that? For all the stereotypes attached to what it means to be "black" or "Latina" instead of simply "American" and (blessedly) unremarkable in the landscape, why does she have to adhere to an identity she doesn't think she fits into?

BTW I get that if she's suddenly saying she wants her kid to speak Spanish...menh. "Poseur" etc. etc.

In the what must catches my attention in "American" culture and the "cultures" we defend and demand so vehemently to define is the flaws. What does she jettison when she says she isn't "Latina" if she hasn't grown up in a Spanish-speaking household or generally been reminded by her parents, cousins, etc. etc. of that identity?

The only Asian role Keanu has played was in Little Buddha. There are actors who are of mixed race who mostly play characters of one race. Dean Cain often plays "white" guys, whereas Lindsay Price and Russell Wong play Asian characters. Cameron Diaz looks white and has probably never been offered a Latina role.

If I recall, the subheds are things like "I Wanted A Baby More Than A Husband!"

Of course, everything worked out perfectly for the single moms they feature, who are all pictured in their suspiciously expensive-looking apartments, sometimes with the other kids they had later on, with the wonderful partners they've found. No mention of financial hardship, or sacrifice at all, except of the "it's been so hard, but totally worth it" variety.

The underlying message was obviously that it's a woman's job in life to have babies NO MATTER WHAT ... very, very creepy. What the fuck is going on in this country, seriously?

I'm loving the concept and the art direction, there's just something about Jessica's portrayal of terror that isn't quite nailing it. I feel like it's a challenge on "America's Next Top Model" that has me feeling like I'm sitting on panel wishing she'd stop being "pretty girl scared" and just really go for it.

Also, I am so mad at Marie Claire because they had that amazing reassignment of EIC story where the woman jumped into someone's cab and was like "I will transform Marie Claire into the next Jane magazine and it will be so hip and blah blah blah!" and they had one semi-readable issue with Maggie Gyllenhaal on the cover and then immediately reverted back into complete in-cohesive nonsense about mascara application and the "world fashions" of skinny people.
