Sometimes we'd dress up as mom & dad and role play. More often, my sister and I would build elaborate leggo towns, which i guess could be called more boy-play since it involved us pretending to be architects and builders. Then we would make up stories about the inhabitants of the town which we Fisher Price 'little people'. That would be characterized as girl-play. If we got bored with that, we'd build hot-wheels ramps and launch cars into our mother's desk or have mock sword fights (boy play again). When that got old, we'd pull out the easy-bake oven and make ourselves some cake and settle down to read stories (more girl-play).

I see similar overlap developing with the small boy and girl that call me dad. The older one, a boy, loves his play houses. (He has a main house and a fabulous beach house.) His little sister (8 mos) is fascinated by cars and things she can move and manipulate, more so than soft cuddly things.

The amount of micro-chip technology now available, particularly sound technology, has limited the play-factor of a lot of modern toys. Kids will always love blocks, giant appliance boxes, balls, and art supplies. But the toy industry can't thrive on those concepts. Today I saw a commercial for a baby doll that pees all over you when you change the diaper--the kids and their mom in the commercial thought that was hysterically fun. It just brought up a lot of bad nights for me.

My sisters and I had an Easy-Bake Oven, and we also had one of those Creepy Crawlers ovens where you put the colored gel into molds and bake your own squishy bugs. I recall getting much more play out of the bug oven.
