for girlie books, though, "gift of magic", paula danzinger, "up in seth's room" and Jean M Auel's clan of the cavebear series totally broke my cherry on "adult" fic. Witch of BP was "honors" reading in 6th grade and my friend Pam and I read ourselves the titillating parts out loud - eee! and us in catholic school!
Ellen Raskin - mysterious disappearance of Leon (i mean noel) and Westing Game were about the most clever things i thought i'd ever read. Maybe still are.

My school library routinely discards their old books, and about two months ago I was thrilled when they dumped all their old Sunfires. I snatched up those puppies and had the best weekend re-reading them. "Caroline" was missing, though, and that was one of my favorites.

Anyhoo ... best part is the ending where Nat gets all proud of his ship and she says that in the summer, she and Hannah will have a garden.

I used to read that book and cry and cry and cry. Tim and his dad are coming home from sell ing their cattle in Verplanck and his father gets captured and ends up dying on a prison ship. And his older brother Sam who had joined the Revolutionary army is executed for stealing their cattle even though he totally didn't.

And, also, since we're naming Cynthia Voigt books, let me nominate A Solitary Blue. At the end of it the main guy is kind of dating Dicey! It's so fantastic. Or Wings of a Falcon with crazy Damall's Island and all the boys and the fighting and then they escape and become the king. It's awesomeness. This is seriously my favorite feature on my favorite site.

I scorned it because I liked to find my own books, but mom used her guilt-skilz so I read it. And *loved it*. Kit was such a hero. I remember most clearly that she was thought a witch for swimming, because people just didn't do that then. It horrified me - a world without swimming! I'd die.

Also, I thought Kit was black, because she came from Barbados. Reading these excerpts now is ruining my mental image of her, because I'd have a much differnt mental impression of Kit if I read the book today.

For example, I was frustrated when I re-read Witch not to find the part where the wooden dolly ends up floating in a tidepool (which would be because that was in Hitty, not this book: Hello!). And I cannot seem to figure out which book has a plot involving, as far as I can remember, a Puritan woman (or perhaps a Quaker) who is scorned by the townspeople as a Jezebel (!) for wearing shoes with red heels. (Oh, I could picture them and coveted them madly as a 9-year-old!) I skimmed Witch awhile ago thinking I would find them there among the silks and slit sleeves, but no (unless I skimmed too fast). Anyone?

It was about a young girl, upset with life at home, and she goes to live in a garden for the summer (somehow, forget the details). She has experiences, and learns lessons, of course. It was soft and magical. Also, the Debussy piece L'apres-midi d'un Faun (sorry if I spelled that wrong) somehow ties in. That's unfortunately all I can remember. Please, please help if you can. I need to see that book again! I would have read it c.1974.
