I've spent the last few days breaking up with the love of my life -- so basically any song is making me cry.

But the one I won't even let myself listen to yet is "Pink Cashmere" by Prince.

Also--an ex boyfriend told me that whenever he heard "Little Red Corvette", he thought of me. I thought it was because I was such a big Prince fan. Then I realized it was because he thought/knew I was kind of a slut. So it sometimes makes me cry -- and sometimes makes me miss my crazy days!

Embracethepink

I know I missed the party but I just want to THANK YOU for alerting me to the fact that there's a book called Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now! I am such a Smiths obsessive I must not only buy every book ABOUT them, but every book with a Smiths song as its title. (But no, that song does not make me cry - if anything, I associate it with miserable jobs). I Know It's Over is another story - I don't think I've listened to that in over 15 years! (Thank god for CDs and skipping over tracks)

magic1

2. Suicide Medicine - Rocky Votolato
3. A Comet Appears - The Shins
4. Boats & Birds - Gregory and the Hawl

When my ass gets dumped, I make a mix CD of horrifically depressing music. Because sometimes, you have to let your misery and self-loathing marinate.

"Lover, You Should Have Come Over" by Jeff Buckley is exquisitely sad. Exhibit A: "My kingdom for a kiss upon her shoulder." Oh, Jeff, you make my soul hurt. "Too deaf, dumb, and blind to see the damage I've done," indeed.

And it may be a Pavlovian response at this point, but I hear the opening notes to "Fond Farewell" by Elliott Smith and just start crying.

And once the intial paralyzing sadness wears off, "Cry Me A River" by Justin Timberlake gets me back on my feet.

LittleSheepie

@gluecake: NO! I thought I was the ONLY PERSON IN THE WORLD who cried at "you are my sunshine."

also, I'm really psyched about the tom waits, bob schneider, david wilcox, and allison krauss love in this thread.

my depression's greatest hits list includes a LOT of fiona apple ("paper bag," "never is a promise"), a lot of the cure ("pictures of you," especially), ani difranco's "untouchable face," johnny cash's "hurt," beck's "lost cause," bjork's "hyper-ballad," and david wilcox's "eye of the hurricane."

the most depressing songs of ALL TIME, though, no question, are tom waits' "martha" and stars' "one more night." martha is just so good about getting older, moving on, and regret regret regret. oh jeez.

"operator, number, please: it's been so many years
will she remember my old voice
while I fight the tears?
hello, hello there, is this martha? this is old tom frost,
and I am calling long distance, don't worry 'bout the cost.
it's been forty years or more now
martha please recall,
and meet me out for coffee
where we'll talk about it all.

and

those were the days of roses,
of poetry and prose and
martha all I had was you and all you had was me.
here was no tomorrow.
we packed away our sorrow
and we saved it for a rainy day."

PeachesDelux

and the entire "Back to Black" album...I bought it the day after he got on a plane back to Venezuela (um, a year a go tomorrow, to be exact) and never did an album seem so apppropriate and descriptive of what I was going through at the time. i love it to death, but it is still bittersweet to listen to. "Tears Dry on Their Own" is our entire relationship, pretty much.

oh god. on that note, I'm going out to be with the people I love and who love me!! enough self-pity! happy valentine's day Jezebelle's!!

catalina

Hmm. 743 comments! i ♥ Jezebel

I will concur with Where Does The Good Go by Tegan and Sarah
Landslide by either F.Mac or Billy Corgan.
Don't Let Me Down by The Beatles
Ex Factor by Lauryn Hill was my default highschool lamentation
Bizarre Love Triangle by Frente is crushingly beautiful
I Can't Be With You by The Cranberries
Hey by The Pixies exudes that evokes that hopeful/ hopeless thing perfectly for me.
For the Spanish speakers, No by Shakira is incredible.

And, seriously, if you want to really hit bottom I Envy The Wind from Lucinda Williams "Essence" album.

And in conclusion, hello, Tori Amos: Silent All These Years

So you found a girl that thinks really deep thoughts/ What's so amazing about really deep thoughts/ boy you best pray that I bleed real soon/ how's that thought for ya?

and of course, Tear in Your Hand:

All the world just stopped now/ So you say you don't wanna stay together anymore/ Let me take a deep breath, babe/ If you need me, me and Neil'll be/ Hangin' out with the Dream King...You don't know the power that you have

That last line about Neil refers to Neil Gaiman but in my head it refers to my sock monkey that my boyfriend and I together named Neil. Yikes!

PeachBeach

@alexysstylor: OMG. After college I picked up and moved halfway across the country where I didn't know anyone and began my first year of teaching in a rough, depressing urban school. I was truly, helplessly unsuccessful for the first time in my life, felt like everything in my life was out of my control, and all my dearest friends were 7 states away. I had no idea what I was doing with my life. My old friends didn't understand why my job was so hard, my family hadn't approved of my decision in the first place, and all my new friends in Philly were similarly depressed. I wasn't meeting anyone and was terribly, terribly lonely. I chose to deal with my problems through a tasty combination of alcohol and denial. Then one shitty day in January one of my best straight-dude friends IMed me with "Happy Birthday, go listen to this song," which, incidentally, was that one. Did I CRYYYYYYY.

vivresavie17

cat power has already been mentioned, so why not add another one to the list? empty shell. this song pretty much says it all.

"all that is left is an empty shell
of my heart that is crushed
i don't never wanna see
what my mind has seen
when you loved me
every night, every night alone with you
every night alone now

when she sits on your lap
try to pretend to laugh
when she does stupid things
just like i used to do
do no hate her
don't you even try
for to leave her is to love her
the same as you and i
I love you
and i miss you too
i really do love you
and i really miss you too

but i don't know you
and i don't need you
and i don't want you anymore

every night, every night alone with you
every night alone now"

and for those of you that know the greatness that is julieta venegas... "andar conmigo." or as my mom says "that julieta sounds like she doesn't have luck with the menses." so pretty much any song of hers i guess...

I bought Shoot out the Lights by Richard and Linda Thompson two Valentines Days ago and it was the best shitty breakup therapy album I've ever bought. The story (or myth) behind the album is what makes it so good. They apparently were divorcing in the middle of recording it...you can hear the pain and anguish on both sides...which makes it fucked up that they're singing back up for one another on songs that are obviously about their fucked up relationship.

I am so showing my age . . . "I'll Be Over You" by Toto. Reminds me of my first "real" love, my junior year of high school. Even after graduation, whenever I'd hear the first line, "Some people live their dreams" I'd crank up the radio and think of Kevin. Years later, when I was married and that song came on the radio, I'd crank it up, with my then husband, and think of Kevin. "As soon as forever is through, I'll be over you." I'm not sure if it was regret that we broke up, or that I really missed him. Either way, I'm over him now. ;-)

MargoKey

Sometimes When We Touch - Dan Hill

You ask me if I love you
And I choke on my reply
I'd rather hurt you honestly
Than mislead you with a lie
And who am I to judge you
On what you say or do?
I'm only just beginning to see the real you

And sometimes when we touch
The honesty's too much
And I have to close my eyes and hide
I wanna hold you til I die
Til we both break down and cry
I wanna hold you till the fear in me subsides

Romance and all its strategy
Leaves me battling with my pride
But through the insecurity
Some tenderness survives
I'm just another writer
Still trapped within my truth
A hesitant prize fighter
Still trapped within my youth

And sometimes when we touch
The honesty's too much
And I have to close my eyes and hide
I wanna hold you til I die
Til we both break down and cry
I wanna hold you till the fear in me subsides

At times I'd like to break you
And drive you to your knees
At times I'd like to break through
And hold you endlessly

At times I understand you
And I know how hard you've tried
I've watched while love commands you
And I've watched love pass you by

At times I think we're drifters
Still searching for a friend
A brother or a sister
But then the passion flares again

Eagles....

"Wasted Time"

Well baby, there you stand
With your little head, down in your hand
Oh, my God, you can't believe it's happening
again
Your baby's gone, and you're all alone
and it looks like the end.

And you're back out on the street.
And you're tryin' to remember.
How will you start it over?
You don't know what became.
You don't care much for a stranger's touch,
But you can't hold your man.

You never thought you'd be alone this far
down the line
And I know what's been on your mind
You're afraid it's all been wasted time

The autumn leaves have got you thinking
about the first time that you fell
You didn't love the boy too much, no, no
you just loved the boy to well, Farewell
So you live from day to day, and you dream
about tomorrow, oh.
And the hours go by like minutes
and the shadows come to stay
So you take a little something to
make them go away
And I could have done so many things, baby
If I could only stop my mind from wondrin' what
I left behind and from worrying 'bout this wasted time

Ooh, another love has come and gone
Ooh, and the years keep rushing on
I remember what you told me before you went out on your own:
"Sometimes to keep it together, we got to leave it alone."
So you can get on with your search, baby, and I can
get on with mine
And maybe someday we will find , that it wasn't really
wasted time
Mm,hm
Oh hoo, ooh, ohh,
Ooh,ooh, mm

Saw Don Henley perform it at Chateau Ste. Michelle winery outside Seattle with a gentle misty rain falling and everyone was standing and singing along. I will never forget that night nor the song.

Alara

I'm so pissed that I came so late to this game and now have zero energy for combing 672 comments! Hopefully "The Trapeze Swinger" by Iron & Wine hasn't been mentioned yet. I think the consensus on that song's lyrics is: boy meets girl, boy grows up with girl, boy and girl fall in love, boy screws over girl, boy does stupid shit, boy dies, boy reminisces on his youthful past with said girl while stuck in limbo because they won't let him into heaven, where the love of his life is. The part where he sings, "I heard from someone you're still pretty" gets me every time.

Ditto every Fiona song, ever, particularly "Not About Love" and "Oh Well."

I'm also a fan of The National's "Slow Show" and its closing lines. I want someone to feel that way about me! :(

vivresavie17

"Tiny Vessels" by Death Cab, it captures disillusionment after the initial headiness of new love perfectly:

this is the moment that you know
that you told you loved her but you don't.
you touch her skin and then you think
that she is beautiful but she don't mean a thing to me.
yeah, she is beautiful but she don't mean a thing to me.

...

all I see are dark grey clouds
in the distance moving closer with every hour
so when you ask "was something wrong?"
that I think "you're damn right there is but we can't talk about it now.
no, we can't talk about it now."

so one last touch and then you'll go
and we'll pretend that it meant something so much more
but it was vile, and it was cheap
and you are beautiful but you don't mean a thing to me
yeah you are beautiful but you don't mean a thing to me

zellerz

Ah! Reference to Sufjan Stevens reminds me of "The Dress Looks Nice On You." That's another great one.

Also, it's from an album I otherwise have no use for, but R.E.M.'s "E-Bow the Letter." Which, by non-chance, I am listening to right now.

And! Wilco's "Muzzle of Bees," for which I gained all new depression-appreciation when it was used in the "Friday Night Lights" season-two premiere. Idiocy of Tyra-Landry plot aside.

ruth_less

Right now I am hating myself *so* much for not even trying to go see him play in a teeny-tiny venue two days ago even though I just saw him last Friday. I have never before in my life been all squealy-fangirl over a musician, but Rhett brings out my inner teenybopper. [My copy of The Believer is signed "To [LBB], I [heart] 4-eyed girls!!!". It is my favorite thing of all time EVER.]

FYI, he sang both parts of "Fireflies" by himself the other night -- kind of hamming up the "guy" and "girl" parts. It was so dorky and cute.

LBB
