I have a lot of male friends who are vegetarian/vegan. My boyfriend used to be vegetarian, mostly for cholesterol reasons (but he would say "all of the reasons"), but now we eat bacon and can't get enough of it. Mmmm, bacon grease is good in everything... My friend in college was super-vegan, but now he eats salmon and chicken (but still VERY healthy). My other friend Dave is still vegetarian, hehe.

JRae

I'm still working my way through the mass of comments but wanted to throw this out there anyway. Both Mr. Tigerjade and I are vegetarians. He went first; he had to do an inspection at a meat processing facility, came home and said, "That's it for me! No more meat." I thought it was a neat idea & went along, although I strung out fish for a while longer. Now I abhor meat, although it stops at my plate. The most I do is tease my officemate for being allergic to vegetables. :>

He's no sissy. Former artillery in the Army, prefers his pickup to my Volvo, plays hard and loves, well, you know. He is what he is; being a vegetarian is part of that but didn't change him from the incredibly desirable man he always has been.

tigerjade

The gross generalizations about vegetarians and vegans in so many of the comments here are just sad.

I'm vegan. I'm no skinny bitch and I don't preach. I wouldn't date an omnivore because I'm just not willing to compromise on something that's so important to me. My SO is vegan and sexay as hell, but you will have to take my word for it, because I'm not sharing.

That said, I call bullshit on veggies who say eating meat will make them sick because they've "lost their ability to digest it." That's just silly and makes you look like an idiot. Grow some balls and speak up for your beliefs honestly, or shut up and eat your lettuce sandwich because that's what you get when you don't make a real case for your dietary choice.

I'm a life-long vegetarian, and my fiance eats meat. I think I'm much more tolerant of meat eaters, and even the occasional shared grill, than people who converted later out of principle. Growing up we made a lot of compromises in the meat-eating world: pulling the pepperoni off pizza at birthday parties; eating "burgers" from fast-food places that contained lettuce, pickle and cheese; watching the rest of the extended family eat turkey on Thanksgiving, but still fighting to pull apart the wishbone. Eventually, my brother, the one boy out the four, was the only sibling to start eating meat, to fit in on the Boy Scout camping trips. It was just that most people ate meat, not out of a disregard for animal life or even out of a conscious choice, and we weren't going to change them or condemn them or stop loving them.

sinistrorse

@Agrado: occasional cheese is what keeps me from being completely vegan. You can have the milk and eggs, but cheese is hard.

However, I try to keep it to the absolute minimum, because a pound of cheese takes ten pounds of milk to make, so it's incredibly resource-intensive, and dairy is ridiculously inhumane. The things those cows go through will make your hair stand on end.

shanaynay

Wow, I'm so disappointed by the comments here on vegans and vegetarians! I'm a vegan, and I hate when people say they hate veggies who "push their views on other people" or who are "judgmental". I don't know ANY veggies that are judgmental- I usually don't even tell people I'm a vegan because the MEAT EATERS are so completely obnoxious about it- hounding me with stupid questions, douchey statements, and general nastiness. It's too bad you people all met one or two idiot vegans and generalized about all of us.

The last two boyfriends I had were meat eaters, and became vegetarian after dating me- NOT because I ever asked them, but because they learned a lot when they asked me questions. I don't think I could ever be in a long term relationship with someone that wasn't at least a vegetarian though. It's an important viewpoint that my boyfriend needs to have, just like I wouldn't date a creationist, an anti-choicer, or a republican. I'm surprised more people don't understand that!

vgnvxn

@BiscuitDoughJones: for sure. my veg mum's cholesterol is higher than my meat eating dad's. go figure.
there has been a 'salt thrifty' gene identified that contributes to the disproportionately high rate of hypertension in african americans, and inuit in canada on a traditional diet high in fat and protein have lower rates of disease than those on a 'westernized' diet. some metabolisms adjust, some don't.

Not that anyone is really benefitting from the average american diet: high fructose corn syrup/sugar use and diabetes, saturated/trans fats and cardiovascular disease, excessive protein and colon cancer- direct causal links well established.

Boyfriend is vegetarian, I am not. I handed him a menu today and told him I was feeling ambivalent about ordering a particular dish filled with shrimp and beef. He told me it sounded tasty and to go for it. Our meals out are often like that. He's veg for ethical reasons, but doesn't expect me to share them, even when I eat lamb in front of him. He's definitely not a sissy or wasting away either. In return, at home we eat mostly vegetarian meals (I'm too lazy to cook two meals, fuck that!) and I've mastered vegetarian enchiladas and gumbo that make our carnivore friends ask for seconds.. and thirds.

Lollia

While I agree with the commenters who've said it's kind of not cool to sneak meat to vegetarians, in the case of Tracie's ex-boyfriend he must not have minded since he's still eating meat, so it seems to have worked out okay for everyone involved. Perhaps it's time to call off the torch-wielding villagers.

I eat meat and my husband doesn't, and it's usually not a problem. Sometimes it's a minor hassle if we're in an unfamiliar neighbourhood looking for a restaurant and have to go to like eleven before we find one that has more vegetarian options than a side of fries, but other than that, it's fine. He does most of the cooking, and I wouldn't ask him to cook meat for me (exception noted: when we lived in a house with a barbecue) -- nor would I need him to, since we eat enough meals out that I don't feel deprived not to have flesh on the menu at home. In fact, he's in the kitchen right now making an amazing-smelling vegetarian dinner for us while I sit here loafing. Pretty sweet deal for me.

Tara

My dad has been a vegetarian for, like, 30 years. He was living in Hawaii and was totally a hippie. Of course, he was also on drugs, bi-polar and went a little crazy and thought he was Jesus--and as Jesus, he shouldn't eat animals. Therefore, he and my mom became vegetarians and my little sister and I were raised without eating meat.

Since I grew up that way, it's just kind of who I am and not actually something I give a shit about. All of my boyfriends were hardcore carnivores, including my current bf. We cook our food separately, but we still eat together with no problem--and I would never dream of trying to convert him.

Plus, my dog loves him because he gives her steak and other delicious meaty items.

Kona

@exelizabeth: See, yeah, this is the sort of answer I was looking for. But, the larger question is: Whether you're doing veggie "right" or "wrong", is the way that it affects your body even up to you? Like, are some people gonna look/be sickly regardless of how healthfully they abstain from animal products, you know? Are some people fighting genetics when they choose this lifestyle? As another commenter stated above, the human body seems to be designed to be omnivorous, so maybe some people's bodies are better equipped to handle a more restrictive diet, protein-wise. I dunno.

BiscuitDoughJones

I'm surprised to see such an unenlightened statement come from a bunch of ordinarily intelligent and forward-thinking ladies. First of all, it's a huge stereotype that vegetarian men are not manly. My ex-boyfriend was and still is a staunch vegetarian who loved watching and playing sports and doing other so-called "manly" things.

My current boyfriend, however, is a meat-eater who hates watching sports (he plays them, though), quilts, and is generally a sensitive and enlightened human being who eats organic meat and mostly vegetarian food because he cares about animals...and to please his vegetarian girlfriend.

What's manly is being brave enough to do what you feel is right for yourself without caring if some carnivorous chicks will think you're a sissy because you don't want to support inhumane practices. For a lot of vegetarians (myself included), it's the idea of eating meat and dairy that comes from animals who are tortured that is most upsetting. And in America, "conventional" meat comes from animals who live and die in hellish conditions.

As someone said earlier, it sucks to be made fun of or preached at by carnivores, especially when you don't usually bring up your vegetarianism (or other peoples' carnivorous-ness) because you feel that what you eat is a personal choice that's no one's business but yours. It's also infuriating when a super-picky eater will refuse a meal and no one says boo, but being a vegeterian somehow isn't a legitimate decision.

But it doesn't bother me, because people who go out of their way to mock vegetarians either are 1) insecure about their own personal choices and too cowardly to face the horrible truth about factory farming because it might make them feel guilty about the bacon they just ate or 2) inconsiderate douchebags who lack compassion.

lesspopmorefizz

I, in no way try to force my beliefs on others, though as is evident in the responses to this post,meat-eaters are not always so easy going when it comes to encountering vegetarians/vegans. To relish in the fact that you slipped ingredients into foods your vegan bf was eating is pretty fucked up, I agree.

Maybe it's because I live in Seattle so there is nothing remotely weird about being a vegetarian, but your assumptions about vegetarians are really weird to me. It's like saying women are naturally delicate and hysterical... Like, what year is this? And am I the only only one who's been reading more and more about the environmental impact of meat? Is global warming not, like, THE issue of our time? Vegetarianism is the simplest and most effective green step you can take.

The bf and I are both veggie, and we don't even think about it any more. We're both on the slim side; I find beefy (and, yes, fat) dudes unattractive. A guy who is thoughtful about his diet and is moderate in what he eats is both attractive to me and a good match.

I'm really late commenting, and this is sort of off-topic, but for some reason it bugs me when people call themselves "carnivores." The fact is that no matter what we choose to eat, biologically humans are omnivores. It means we can survive and thrive on a variety of diets, and it is probably a big part of our success as a species.

I'm a vegetarian--for twelve years now. So is my husband, though he wasn't for about a year of our marriage. I didn't try to convert him; it just happened. He isn't a pussy but not really macho, either -- I could put up with a macho dude anymore than I could a pussy. I get annoyed with him because he has a really sensitive stomach now and gets sick if there's like a trace of anything meaty in his food, like fish sauce in Thai food. I'm half-Filipina -- fish sauce is like part of my blood, so it doesn't bug me.

girlleastlikelyto

Bourdain's a giant tool.

I'm puzzled by the attitude of some of the omnivores commenting here that it's okay to crap all over vegetarians and vegans, but that they don't want said veggies crapping on THEM and their meat. Double standard much?

Ex-husband is a committed carnivore. It made cooking a real pain in the ass, because he insisted that meat was necessary not only every day, but every meal, and would complain incessantly about any lack of dead animal. Good guy, but annoying about that. I eventually quit cooking for him. His mom and sister are vegetarian, and his mom is one of the original tree-hugging hippies, formerly very active in crusading for animal rights, so I expected him to be cooler about it.

Long story short: I might date another carnivore, but I vastly prefer fellow veggies. I don't eat meat for both ethical and environmental reasons, and said reasons are a big part of my overall ideology. It'd be nice to share that.

And anybody who sneaks animal products into a vegan's food is a disrespectful, underhanded, rude bitch, IMO.

shanaynay

When I started dating my husband I was a vegetarian; he was a dedicated omnivore. We've both changed though, because frankly, aren't most relationships about compromise? It was really a matter of wanting to eat together instead of 2 seperate meals every single night. I now eat fish and the occasional chicken, and he has learned that tofu is only evil when prepared badly. I still won't cook or let him cook red meat in the house, but only because the smell truly makes me ill.

He still eats plenty of meat; if we go out or order in he'll get a cheeseburger. Am I going to get on him for that? Of course not; I married him, I don't OWN him.

I was never a veggie for moral reasons though, I just hated the texture of meat, and still can't eat poultry if it's dry.

On a side note, I never got sick when I started eating meat again. But I was a vegan for a while, and getting back on the dairy was a sickly nightmare.

yarnmule

I haven't had meat since 1984 (I'm ovo-lacto), and once friends of mine, thinking they were being...I don't know what...assholes maybe? told me that the chili dip they had made was with soy meat substitute. It was hamburger. They really just thought I should eat some meat! They were going to tell me later.

Well, I had quite a bit of it, and spent the next 12-18 hours with my head in the toilet, with the most excrutiating vomiting I have ever experienced in my life. I didn't know until later that was the reason. At least they said they felt bad. I guess.

So please, don't feed your vegetarian friends meat because you think it's funny, or they should or something. Turning your insides out is not funny or educational.

By the way, I am in no way a "preachy veggie" - I never even mention it unless someone asks me why and really wants to know. (Moral reasons, not for health. I would probably eat meat if I could raise it myself.)And I'm fun to go out with! And I don't care if people cook meat in my pans, or on my grill.

I looked through most of the comments, but I don't think that anyone has touched on the fact, that a lot of the time, when a man (or anyone) eats meat--straight-up meat from who knows where, which factory farm, non-organic, wherever--chances are that that meat is stuffed with hormones, often estradiol--a "female sex hormone"! It is considered possible that this and other hormones used in meat production could be responsible for declining male fertility.

Being picky about food, choosing vegetarianism, these are not "sissy" choices; to my mind, these are important issues. It's your body people! Choose wisely.

belsa

I quit eating meat earlier this year (except salmon- I would never deprive myself of a salmnon/asparagus meal) after dating my vegetarian girlfriend for a couple of months.

It was really more of a health issue than anything else (I'm eating so much healthier now). Plus, she told me that she could taste the meat on my balls.

Having seen the many videos on the internet of how meat is produced, I had a hard time intellectualizing my consumption of meat. Somehow I was able to create the cognitive dissonance to continue eating meat. However,
I can't create the cognitive dissonance to put myself in a position that inhibits the licking of my balls.

So the meat went and my ball lickings have seen a distinct uptick in the last month or so. Now I eat better and regularly enjoy the ball-licking-with-cupped-hand-on-top-of-.../head-handjob.

Those kind of handjobs really qualify as blow jobs in my mind.

Nick Mortensen

Jeeeses Jezebels, really? Long time reader, first time poster..I love you all, but the idea of eating meat being so cool and manly and/or womanly (and being a veg therefore sissy/uncool) is just shitty. Yeah, a lot of vegetarians and vegans are royal assholes. But a lot of us do it because eating meat is just unfathomable - I haven't been able to touch the stuff since I was 10 (I'm now 30s). I've been asked if I'd eat it if I was starving, and maybe I would.. but to me meat is not food, it's dismembered body parts. I also ride a motorcycle, cuss like a sailor, and drink like a fish. So I'm a whole lot more than what I put or don't put in my mouth.

On a final note.. this guy is NOT a sissy, I think you'll agree:
[online.wsj.com]

gravitycupcake

I was a miserable vegetarian for 15 years. Now if I need a mood-boost, I eat a steak. Instant joy. I lived with a vegan for a year, and she took it to such an extreme that she told the builders who were renovating her flat to not eat their ham sandwiches indoors, as it was "disrespectful". Oddly, I've never known a carnivore to prevent someone from eating a tofu salad in their home. Plus, he got me to eat fish which I do now regularly and am all the better for it.

I will add though, now that I work and he stays home with the baby, it's begnning to stress on our relationship.

I've been a vegetarian for decades and back in the day, a promoter friend of mine used to call me to make dinner for bands that were in town and had vegetarian members. I've cooked for The Exploited, Sham 69, the Cro Mags and the Descendants. I guess because of all that old school punk rock I never even considered the sissy factor. Also, once I heard on Dr. Sue Johansson's show that the sperm of vegetarians was supposed to taste better. So far I haven't had the opportunity for a hands on taste test, but I'll keep you posted…

Ellabella

Food plays a major part in all my relationships. I SERIOUSLY considered not dating a guy because he was allergic to all sea food. I absolutely adore fish, and didn't want all our dining to revolve around chicken, which I hate, and red meat, which I like, but not as much as fish, more specifically sushi. In the end, the sex was so good, I had to ignore the dietary restrictions.

Beigebaby

I completely agree about the breaking-up-over-sneaking-me-meat... thing. Although it sounds totally ridiculous, I had a panic attack (I'm not speaking hyperbolically) when I accidentally ate mutton a couple years ago. When you haven't eaten flesh in 10 years its upsetting to have it happen and even more upsetting if someone you trusted did it to you.

Yanee

After catching typhoid in Thailand and using alternative medicine practices to get the pesky little parasites out of my body, I can't eat dairy or drink alcohol. I had a real problem without alcohol at first and of course chocolate was a real bummer. I wasn't prepared for the reactions I got when people found out I don't drink alcohol. I love being around tipsy or drunk people, b/c I've had to learn how to socialize without alcohol and after a few drinks people are about as relaxed as I am without drinking. Eating out can be a real pain, as butter is constantly being used, people can get a bit impatient sometimes. I never preach about junk food, as my diet is really clean, but I hate "the born again" dieters, as the ones who preach are usually the ones who can't stick with it!

Jazibel

Plus he acted as if he was so morally superior and I didn't understand why he would want to be with someone who, in his mind, was a cold-hearted animal killer destroying the Earth.

Well, months later, he's still a vegan but I decided to give him another chance, trying to learn more about vegan cuisine so I could cook for him and we could have that bonding experience that is a shared meal. But no matter what I made, he always insisted on eating a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and wouldn't go near my soy ice cream. I dumped him again.

It's really easy to be a vegan when you are just a picky eater. Men who are veggies/vegans=not necessarily sissies. Men who are picky eaters (and don't have to be for allergy-related reasons)=sissies. Too bad Anthony Bourdain is married :-(

okeydokeyartichokey
