About 18 years ago I got a receptionist job for a up-and-coming American designer (who v. famous these days). The girl whose job I was taking was a 6ft tall, size 4 17 year-old. I was a 5'8" size 10 but was treated and talked about (to my face) as if I was morbidly obese. Sure the company had enough $$$ for a gym membership and personal trainer for one of the head people and to pay the designer's drug dealer, but God forbid they had to employ a fit model!

And I'm seriously enjoying this feature and this writer, especially so since she used the phrase "thither and yon". Hither isn't part of the fashion industry then?

Keep in mind, also, that more often than not the editor of story, or even a copy editor -- not the writer -- comes up with headlines. It's due to some weird journalistic idea that it would otherwise be a conflict of interest. Kinda how reporters aren't allowed to take the photos that accompany their stories, and vice versa with photogs. I guess that dynamic is relegated more to the dystopic world of mainstream journalism, but these old world hold-overs do surface in on-line journalism. I was only getting $10/hr (or at least that was what we agreed to). I worked my butt off, designed a house for this family on Lon Guyland, and they loved it. I put together all of the construction docs, and all the other guy had to do was sign them. I put in at least 2 months worth of time. I got $500. My rent was $700/mo. I shat a brick when I got that check. I had to sell pretty much everything I owned just to live.

My parents weren't too sympathetic though, because my rent (at 19 years old) was almost as much as their mortgage. And that was MY choice.
