Crying should be judged entirely by each situation. Personally, I find nothing wrong with someone (male or female) who can be touched or moved (or angered enough in the right circumstances, like when a loved one is experiencing pain that you can't alleviate) enough to shed tears. Manipulative crying sucks. But being in touch with your emotions is a healthy thing in an adult.

I cried in front of my boss once after a really rough day. He had to talk to me because I ended up flipping out at one of my co-workers, and then I ended up explaining to hi why I was so mad in the first place, and then the tears just came and wouldn't go. He gave me a hug, though. And then he gave me the next day off. So I guess it pays to cry sometimes...and to have a gay boss who gets you.

Both hitting and crying are ways of releasing adrenaline, which builds up when you get angry, so both hitting and crying make sense as physical outlets. It's a pretty basic biological response, really. Maybe people who cry easily just build up adrenaline easily, same with people who get violent.

My dad is too, and on occasion that old Kodak commercial (what is it with the Kodak commercials? genius freaking tearjerking ad agency) with the little girl growing up and her father teaching her to dance, and then dancing with her at her wedding, will play when we are watching TV together, and we will cry and hug each other.

I was removed from a showing of ET when I was five because I was hysterical. My mom had to convince me ET wasn't going to die. When we came back into the theatre, the old man sitting behind us leaned over and said: "It'll be all right, girlie." I love that old man.

BUT, after the ET years I equated crying with weakness or badness bc my mom cried all the time and was actually really severely depressed, and so I got very OCD about it and would not allow myself to cry unless something was officially really terrible. Took me about 20 years to embrace my weepiness and now that it doesn't freak me out, I actually love it. Love feeling things, love letting stuff out, love not being terrified of crying. Once it has less power and just feels like a nice release the whole paradigm sort of changed for me.

I never quite managed to explain that I wasn't crying because I was weak, but rather I was crying because I was furious but slightly too afraid to yell back.

Other than that, I am pretty mannish in my reasons for crying. I cry over rugby; I cried when Ireland made a balls of the France match in the World Cup last year and I cried when the French (again) stole the Six Nations title from under our fingers. So with the Six Nations underway again and judging by our ridiculous performance against Italy, I have a few weeks of tears ahead.

We dropped a hefty amount (for us) of money on a new laptop last month and it kept malfunctioning. For 3 weeks I couldn't get online with this expensive piece of junk. After a frustrating call with India I just broke down and sobbed. FYI My boyfriend only cries when we get in monster fights and he thinks we might break up. and that kind of makes me feel good but also like a monster. He, by the way, thinks Hillary faked it, although, he also thinks I cry sometimes to manipulate him. Which is not true 98% of the time.

I'd slam my door, cry myself to sleep, and the next day i'd feel great- and my parents quickly figured out that a good cry was all I had needed.

I kind of wonder what this says about me, but since I managed to enter adulthood without any therapists or medications I figure I'm stable enough.

I will cry openly and w/o reservation when grief is involved, and occasionally, out of happiness. But when I'm angry - I will either raise my voice or go stone cold silent and remove myself to avoid saying anything hateful and to give me time to simmer down.

I've been working in a very male dominated field for about eight years, and I find that this has changed a lot. I rarely cry now, maybe once or twice a year and I could never cry at work. I think being in an environment where crying would be the ultimate sign of weakness has forced me to find other ways to express emotion. I do a lot more cursing, yelling, evil stares, etc. I don't think that one way is better than the other, and there is definitely something cathartic about a good cry. That being said, when I have to deal with someone else's tears, I am completely inept. I usually panic and try to escape the situation as quickly as possible.

Somewhat related: I actually kind of know Gayle Sayers, who was played by Billt Dee Williams in the movie. He lives in my neighborhood in Chicago, and shops in the commissary in my building. We've chatted a couple of times, including a rather in depth discussion last season on why the Bears are awful. He and I were agreeing on nearly everything (esp. Rex Grossman) and I remeber thinking what a cool older man this guy was. It was only after he left that the owner of the store asked me if I knew that was Gayle Sayers I was debating the Bears with. You could have knocked me over with a feather -- had I known it was him, I would've been too shy to say anything!
