Pregnancy is not desired for our teens. It's a hard road, but survivable.
But there are many STD's that are even more difficult to bear.
Have any of you heard of the STD, HPV before?
A condom isn't guaranteed protection from this awful disease.
And, you can contract it just by touching 'particular areas' of the body.
20 million people currently have this disease many contracted in their teens.
About 6.2 million Americans get a new HPV infection each year.
Don't believe me...check out the Center of Disease Control's website.
And if you think that the Gardisil shot will protect your teen,
the vaccine does not protect against all types of HPV.
It only protects from four strains and there are 30.
And it also greatly increases your daughter or future daughter in laws
risk for cervical cancer; many years down the road.
I've talked with Many teens both male and female who have been involved
sexually. I can tell you that most secretly regret it and wish they'd waited.

So, wouldn't you prefer your teens wait for a partner who is 100% positive that
they'll not bring disease into their lives. Or don't you prefer your teen find a spouse one day
that doesn't bring a bunch of horrible baggage with them? Or find out that they now have cervical
cancer from a bad choice when they were a teen?
I know I do. I want the absolute best for my kids. That's why I teach them to wait
for ALL sexual activity until marriage.

My sister tells me that she knows at least 8 girls that are pregnant at her school, just in her grade (10th), and there is even a pregnancy class for pregnant girls. But god forbid you educate them about it. Hell, my mom used to be one of those "wait until you're married" types, but when she found out my sister didn't get any sex ed she flipped. Now everywhere I drive there's always a "Abstinence only" billboard, which I always rant about as I pass by. The really annoying ones are like "You have a choice, say NO!" Isn't that being... hypocritical? Maybe they should say it better, like "You have a choice, so you can say no." But no they like to over emphasize the no. Like... fill the entire billboard with "NO!" and "Say NO!" You know, if you really do have a choice... you can say yes AND no. Ugghhh... I can rant about those billboards all day.

(I live 30 min from Tyler {and go there quite often visiting friends} where the dude ate his girlfriend. I was pretty damn freaked out by that)

Sadly, I live in a Bible belt. But surprisingly I remember having sex ed. We had it a few days for 6th and... 7th I think. One day for learning about girls, another day for learning about boys. I remember them telling us about boys having 'wet dreams' but they're not peeing in the bed. That always confused me. Hell, it wasn't until years after being sexual active that I remembered that and was like "OMG, so THAT'S what they meant!!". Kinda like how you don't realize til your *adult* that your dog didn't fly up into the sky like your parents said, but got hit by a car. Ok, maybe not as dramatic, but still the same.

Ugh, I was rambling, anyway what I was trying to say is that by the time my sister was in high school (she's 7 years younger than me) I realized they never taught her sex-ed. I was really pissed and wanted to complain to the school. Sadly I didn't.

@braak: The area is actually known as the Metro East. It's right across the river from St. Louis and is closer to downtown than lots of Missouri suburbs. It's a more accurate description of your location than to just say "Illinois" because inevitably, people think that means Chicago.

It was TINY -- no more than 250 students. My 8th grade class had, oh, 13 kids, tops.

And I'm still surprised to this day that such a small school allowed this, especially back then (1994 or so): All but one of us in my 8th grade class were part of a special "Sex-Ed/AIDS class" where we learned everything under the sun about STDs ... and then went around and put on presentations for other students in other schools, and for students in our school. It was AMAZING, and I learned so much. I really wish more schools did this kind of stuff. And those girls are HEROS.

Which may have been the intent.

High school, freshman year, health class was taught by a coach-haha. Not the coach in Mean Girls, alas, although there were rumors he was boinking a student. I don't think there was a lot of sex-lots of stuff on memorizing bones, but no "Memorize THIS bone!" And oh yes, we watched a video on abortion and how bad it was. Don't remember much about the sex part of class, but the abortion video pisses me off way more now than it did then.

So yay for these girls. And boo to abstinence only-why are we pretending? Why? The good people at Guttmacher say 95 percent of people aren't virgins on their wedding night. If only people who were could teach abstinence classes, methinks we'd have lots less of em and they might die on their own. Of course, then all the churchy people would come in, like my old minister who announced to everyone that he and his wife were virgins upon marriage. Which reminds me of a story I read on Huckabee and his wife that said that, and eww.

Our adorable, asexual teacher would make us all put condoms over our fists (to prove no man should say they're "too big"). The boy I was dating at the time (age 14 and very much a non-sexual relationship) was so embarassed by the word "sex" being mentionned in my presence that he'd try and squirm his 6 ft frame as small as possible in a bid to be invisible - which obviously never worked.

I do wish she'd told us to masturbate more though... I didn't discover that joy until I was 18, all those years wasted!
