These bikes not only go along with the mayor's campaign for a 'greener nyc' by eliminating congestion - promoting bike riding but also ties into the Spring ad campaign featuring - BICYCLES! Just take a look at the stores and the connection is clear.

Apparently some jagoffs decided that gradually stealing parts off it until all that was left was the main bit that was chained to the fence was a good idea. Bastards.

But yeah, this is kind of a lame PR stunt. Could have been executed much better. Viva la orange bike liberation!

Also on the LSU bike riding tip: I got hit on my bike at Highland and Chimes and the fucker kept going. I woke up to an old lady standing over yelling "wake up, girl, wake up". Apparently, she was so old she was restricted to the fully standing position and was looking around for something to poke me with. So, with no one to help me up (she was the only one who stopped) I stumbled back on my back and went to class. I was bleeding from several places (including my head) but I had a story due that day so I kept pumping to class. When I got there, it was cancelled. I totally freaked out and a professor called said LSU cops. They told me to call a friend with a pick up truck - to get myself and my bike home because I couldn't just leave it on campus.

We (the cars) and you (the cyclists) need to respect each other. i will always give you the room i can and shoulder check before making a right hand turn as well as understand that you are not protected like me in case of accident. But as a cyclist you have to obey the traffic laws too and understand that if you fly around a corner, use sidewalks, wear all black with no lights or come towards me in my lane i cant always make the safest choice for you.

Same kinda goes for pedestrians but thats a whole other can of worms.

It doesn't make me any more sweaty than switching trains 2 or 3 times a trip, and I get there quicker. If you want to wear a skirt, get a girly bike and get on with it.

Bicycle AND pedestrian rights will only get better when more people ride and/or make that clear to the city. The Ghost Bikes, while a painful reminder to many, serve a valuable purpose in acknowledging the needless death of a cyclist. Manhattan encourages car use (and accompanying recklessness) by expanding existing streets (like Houston) and turning them into suburban highways. It's an island, and we should limit how much dangerous traffic takes up space. The more people express their unhappiness with this, the better it is for those of us who walk and bike.

Call 311 and complain about the Karan campaign. It amounts to cluttery outdoor advertising without a permit and is no different than the crappy candidate signage that never gets collected by the corresponding campaigns. Eyesore. Blech.

Especially the ones who brag about beating traffic lights and using sidewalks to get to their destinations faster than cars. I've been mowed over by a cyclist on the sidewalk who had the nerve to yell at me for walking slow. On the freaking sidewalk.

This is a sore topic for me, and maybe I'm not rational about it, but often times while I am idealogically behind cyclists, a sizeable minority of the ones I know do incredibly stupid, arrogant things and seem to feel like they are immune to consequences because they are morally superior, or something. Gah.
And I know the vast majority of cyclists are awesome, but those bad apples, man.

i agree with that sentiment, really. americans are such jerks and think that cars always have the right of way. every pedestrian should be on the side of the bikers, too...

he tries to 1) get me to ride and 2) teach me about bikes. but i work in the warehouse district of LA, and i really don't want to be impaled by a forklift on my way to work at 7:30 am. i just tune him out, until he asks me if something looks pretty, and then i tell him yes or no.
