I spent my late teens and most of my twenties wearing long dark pants a shoes with at least a three inch heel in an attempt to look skinner and taller. Then came the foot pain and ankle sprains. While "cute" is a describer I have always hated (who wants cute when there's such a thing as beautiful to aspire to?) sometimes it's simply better to face facts and accept reality. I can be a shorty and make my legs looks better through yoga and other forms of exercise, and if people find it necessary to help me with heavy bags and whatnot, then so much the better. My 5'7" mother (who has done "tall" and doesn't see what the big deal is either) once pointed out to me: Yes, stilletos are sexy and all, but what is sexier is seeing a woman walk with the confidence that she's not about to fall flat on her ass. For me, that happens with flats and kitten heels. But to each her own, as they say...

And nothing makes you feel less sexy than limping, let me tell you. Weirdly, it makes me feel fat, and I never feel fat.

So I've learned to love flats. I started doing pilates, and that's made my posture strong, confident, and sexy. Standing up straight is hot.

Also, my boyfriend is only a couple of inches taller than me, and I feel weird when I'm towering over him. So all around, even though I think heels are sexy, I'm not that sad I've had to cut them out of my life. It's one less thing to worry about, and I get to spend my time healthy. Immobilizing back pain is a pretty strong incentive to a) get rid of the heels and b) get your back healthy.

And those of you who tried but can't wear heels, I know some people just have congenitally jack-up feet, but have some of you tried getting higher quality shoes? I find that it's not such a big deal for me to wear cheap flats, but it's more critical to shell out the big bucks for heels that are well-fitted, of good quality material, and well balanced. Take it from somebody who has close to a hundred pairs of shoes. My collection could make some of you faint.
