i worked retail & fast food for years & got damned sick of the idiot parents out there who'd pull that garbage & take it out on the kid(s).

setting my child up for failure to behave was not acceptable parenting. when my son was still baby/young toddler, i had sense enough not to take him out with nothing to do, or w/o him having gotten enough sleep or snacks.

as he got older we started with small places like McDonald's when he was 3 & have worked our way up to Oliver Garden, etc. if he got out of hand, we left. even if relatives were in tow (ex in laws for a reason!). he got the point fairly quickly and really hasn't been a problem in public in ages (he's 10 now)

that said, some places really are for kids & if an adult doesn't want to deal with'm go eat somewhere else.

We're well down the path to emulating European socialized medicine and it will be far better to nip these issues now before we spend billions on it ourselves. I know how harsh it sounds but it is grossly unfair for all that money to be spent on people who made a choice to engage in an activity that is well documented to directly cause expensive medical conditions when so many more deserving people are out there and will not get the care they need because of limited funding.

Second, after having been in the medical field for over fifteen years, working at hospitals and clinics in the Delta and around Jackson, I think I can safely say that obesity and related problems like diabetes have two things in common: Welfare and Medicare/Medicaid. We are subsidizing obesity and have for several years now. Third, MS has more black elected officials than any other state in the union. I don't think the KKK is much of a big thing anymore. Fourth, it is always easier to take potshots at MS for stupidity, racism, etc, than it is to take a look at your own home. How is making fun of someone based on where they live any different than making fun of any other difference? Bigotry is bigotry. If you look around, you can find stupid people, fat people, racists, sexists, agists any where close to YOUR home.

Why not put the funding into things like, removing junk food from schools so that parents have the opportunity to teach their kids what is healthy and what is not and so kids do not get hooked on junk food so early in life. I know they put something in the food that hooks kids from the very beginning so that anything remotely healthy tastes bad to them. Yet the junk food companies want to get kids hooked because that is more money into their pockets.

Also playgrounds and free public spaces have been greatly decreasing here, there are no playgrounds like when I was a kid in the 80s. No wonder kids are getting fatter, they are having more junk food marketed to them and we have removed any source of exercise they have, there is simply nothing for kids to do. Free public spaces such as parks now have parking fees when they used to be free so people are now getting charged for the simple opportunity to go out and get a bit of exercise in a safe place. Not everyone can walk the streets in their neighborhood because it just isn't safe anymore.

We can't discriminate against the fat when its so hard (and out of reach of many families) to make healthy choices about what their children eat and how people live their lives. The grocery stores aren't stocked with produce and healthy foods, they are chock full of potato chips and horrible processed food.

Banning people from restaurants also won't help, what if you don't eat out but once or twice a year, eat home cooked meals all year long and avoid fast food joints like the plague because you just don't like the taste of the food or it makes you sick. Trust me you get sick from fast food once and you won't go back (hopefully). There are people that are still fat that avoid restaurants altogether..

The "drunk in a bar" analogy doesn't work, because we don't cut off an alcoholic in a bar from hurting himself by having that first drink, we cut off a drunk who's had too many from drinking yet more. Preventing someone from being served at a restaurant is a form of discrimination, and it has no analog with other self-inflicted physical ailments -- we don't ask someone if they have hypertension before we hand them a cup of coffee, nor do we ask if someone has diabetes before we'll give them an ice cream cone. Guys, I think this may have been entered as a "poison bill" intended to point out the hypocracy of a related bill - to illustrate how another bill discriminates against obese people/infringes on personal freedoms. This would especially make sense in a red state that doesn't usually pass "ahead of the curve" public health legislation (poor nutrition track record or not).

I don't see any real activity in the Mississippi legislature right now related to obesity that's really controversial, though (just a school health/nutrition education bill that shouldn't have a problem passing).

Something similar happened in Arkansas last year - a pro-smoking senator wanted to point out the hypocracy of smoking restrictions, so he put forth a poison bill prohibiting smoking in personal vehicles with a kid present.

Too bad that bill passed. Oops!

There is an author and two co-sponsors who intend propose the law. The proposal may have been written tongue-in-cheek, or in a hyperbolic manner to illustrate some point (I don't know what).

I really dislike when the media (and now, the new media) takes examples of outrageous legislative proposals, many of which are not meant to be taken "seriously", and attributes them to the entire legislative body. Kooks and crackpots introduce wacky bills all the time, often to illustrate a point or expose hypocrisy. I'm not sure, but in the U.S. House, I think Bob Dornan from California was kinda known for these types of stunts.

And as for Euros being obese too, I spent the summer in Greece and it's mostly the older population there, especially the women. People used to drive everywhere, even if where they were driving to was just a block or two from their homes, and the men would drive their wives to any place they needed to go, even to the grocery store (everywhere I went in Greece, grocery stores were well within walking distance). So that generation has hardly ever gotten any excercise. The younger generation is cutting down on unecessary driving.

I'm currently trying to eat a healthier diet and while most fast food establishments have nutritional info on their websites, it is very difficult to get accurate information when eating in a sit-down restaurant. Which means I usually end up ordering grilled chicken and veggies everywhere I go.

They cause foot problems and cause back problems because of the irregular position your body is placed into when using them. Kids feet seem to come right out of the shoes when they are walking because the shoes are so stiff they don't bend, this causes blisters and other problems with feet, also kids walk funny in them because you cannot walk normally when you have huge wheels in the heels of your shoes. Not to mention growing kids are the ones mostly using them so the problems are built into the kids from day they start using them. 10-20 years down the line we will be here hearing about how kids have gotten foot and back problems from wearing heeleys and are looking for solutions to their problem so they can walk, work and live a normal life.

Most kids give up on them after a week of use after their feet kill them from the shoes but other kids get used to them and love them.

Whenever you see a kid wearing heeleys in the supermarket its the telltale sign of stupid parents because no parents would put shoes on their kid that would cause that much damage to a kids body.

There are 2 coal-burning power plants located within city limits and it's been shown, time and again, that rates of asthma and lung cancer are markedly increased in the surrounding areas. Will the city council, state gov't, or EPA do anything about it? No, because ComEd has the politicians bought part and parcel.

But those dirty, evil smokers *gasp* can't light up inside (which, granted, I don't smoke and don't like smelling like smoke, but I do expect it if I go ou tto a bar or concert) because someone might get cancer from secondhand smoke. It's a PR bandaid. It makes the gov't look like it's attempting to protect the health of its citizens while simultaneously doing nothing to go after the biggest problems and demonizing a group of people simply because what they do is socially unacceptable.

It's the same thing with this proposal. Demonize a group of people for their unhealthy choices and make it seem like the gov't is proactive about public health when in reality they cuddle the same agribusiness and fast food corporations that are supllying these unhealthy foods.

Not to mention, the reason low income people don't cook healthy meals may be because it takes TIME to do that, and resources and cookware. Kinda hard to cook well-balanced meals when you work 2 jobs as a single mom or something.

there is sooo much wrong with this.
first: as has been mentioned BMI doesn't accurately measure obisity. second, any implementation would be rediculous (huge scales or whatever) thirdly, where's the cut off, can I get lunch today, but when I gain a pound from eating it I can't have dinner? fourth, no one's talking about the fact that some of us are just fatter than average, and we didn't f-ing do anything wrong! I'm vegitarian, I eat very healthy food, I write down everything I eat, I exersize, guess what? I'm 30lbs overweight! it sucks and is no fair and we've got enough issues to deal with from the media aboout body image, without having to worry about if the resturant I'm going to won't let me in! WTF!?!
