@MsDirector: One of the reasons those magazines were called "the Seven Sisters" is that they used to be the only magazines that hired or published graduates of the Seven Sisters. (I think it goes back to the 1920s-30s. As anyone who read the Feminie Mystique, knows they've always been terrible.)

I miss a lot these days. *sigh* I asked Dowd what it would take for them to be called by their last names, and she said she thought it was actually out of respect for them rather than the other way around. Sort of like, "Oprah!" or "Madonna!", I guess was her point. I don't remember? Did the Brits call Margaret Thatcher "Maggie?"

@etvoila: Possibly, but I think it's being overexaggerated. My grandmother said for YEARS she would never vote for a woman (I know, great role model). But she has vowed to vote for Hillary. My dad is not the biggest feminist (coincidence, considering his mom?) but HE would vote for her. I take their votes very seriously bc they were GWB supporters!!

What was irritating to me was how they refer to lady candidates by their first names, whereas the boys by their surname. But, I'm picky that way.

@SinisterRouge: Back in 2000, my BF at the time and I used to "argue" politics a lot. Essentially it was me telling him how effing silly he was to vote for the Anti-Christ (Bush). Every.Single.Time it ended with me getting him to admit that the only reason he was voting for Bush was because he was sure Bush was going to win and he didn't want to be "on the losing team."

I take it as a sign of progress that people are carefully weighing the relative merits of either Obama or Clinton and deciding accordingly. What bugs the fuck out of me, though, is this persistent suspicion that a not-insignificant part of that non-support is driven by entirely apolitical motivations.
