1) The thing I kept thinking about when I read this story (besides graphic thoughts of finding jerramy and teaching him the lesson he so clearly needs to be taught) was how would a sexual assualt victim's advocate in a big football school deal with a young woman showing up, who had been raped by a prominent football player. I mean, if you know the school has a history of supporting the players against the victims, what's the thing you do to best support the woman's mental health?

2) The whole "boys will be hoys" mentality drives me absolutely nuts- for all the obvious reasons, and also because it does such a serious desserive to men. Even assuming, for the sake of argument, that 20 year old men really are biologically predisposed to dehumanizing acts against women (a huge freaking assumption), the only way that that behavior changes is when there are consequences to that behavior. not only did Jerramy not face consequences, he got reinforcement that his behavior was fine- as long as he kept winning. As mentioned before- how well is that going to serve him when he is 35, can't play football, and has to deal with the rest of his life?

We had a detective show us a video in our criminal procedure class of an interrogation where they got a confession out of an innocent woman. Just for context, I did not go to Permian, I went to Odessa High for an advanced academic program - it was a magnet program established largely to draw majority students to a minority school. The racial balance in the schools is much improved. I believe that the racism issues have improved over the last 20 years, but it is hard for me to say for sure - as a white woman, I cannot speak for the experience of minorities in the area. The economy is back in a boom - the book was written during a bust cycle, and this year, for the first time in about a decade, Permian did well in the state football playoffs. Everyone says "Mojo is back." Some of the problems I have with the portrayal in the book are related to specific individuals. For example, John Wilkins, who was the athletic director when the book was written refused to give interviews to the author and he was painted in a very negative light. I have known him well ever since I was a child, and he bears very little resemblance to the "character" in the book. The author came to town with an agenda and that much is obvious to Odessans when we read the book, but it cannot be denied that Odessa is a town with its flaws, one being an extraordinary football addiction. In fact, my office is considered prime real estate because I have a fantastic view of our high school stadium (which seats 20,000) from my window.

That being said, I worked in student judical services at Florida State University when a member of the football team who is now in the NFL was accused of rape. We received batches of police reports every day and one of my duties was to process them and file them so the student would be notified to appear for a hearing. I processed his file and it was gone by the end of the week. The victim was pressured by the university president and the athletic director to drop the case.

Men had been accepted in small numbers to programs in the past, but the only reason there are droves of idiots (I'm not generalizing or man-hating, I'm speaking from the pathetic experience of having class with these tards) roaming these halls now is the addition of a football team. Which blows, ironically. Meanwhile it was a women's college for years and years and the Women's Studies program is pathetic, and a minor. You can thank it's being a Catholic college for that.

Since football was added as recently as 2005 I wouldn't be surprised if in a few years the rapes start to rise. Statistically speaking it's inevitable, and after taking a sociology course taught by a feminist doc last semester with three football players, I'm calling it right now.

Many of the bigger Ivy schools could afford to charge NO tuition at all, thanks to alumni donations- but find that when they do, admissions become less desirable, because people think expensive=good school. So they overcharge. And then the other colleges overcharge to look good next to the Ivys. And all of the colleges become involved in a huge rat race of competition for students. More students= more money. Part of the luring of students comes from sports, and the money that brings in- that money is used to refurbish campuses or on programs, as often as it is used for "low-income" students. More money spent, more students attracted, more money earned, more money spent, more competetition. I think it's naiive to say that it's just for low-income students. These college sports programs are to help the school compete for students with other colleges. It's not a charitable thing. And to the point of this post, they could certainly lose one rapist tightend without sinking the school, yknow? Ugh. It just makes me ill.

Our football team went 0-10 and 1-9 my sophomore and junior years and they always had top equipment, uniforms, coaching. The girls' varsity basketball team wore the same polyester, craptastic uniforms for 10 years and had a different coach every year I played (couldn't keep them on staff at their bargain-basement prices). In spite of this, we were always playing in the semi and finals.

In my opinion, it is sexist, plain and simple. There is no "molding of talent" going on. They (the guys) get the opportunities, and the girls get bupkis.

A girl was raped in my college and decided she did not want to bring charges. The college refused to let her drop a class that she had with the rapist because the add/drop period had passed. She then almost got kicked out because her grades were so low. She was an A student until the rape. She had written an article in the campus newspaper about how poorly she was treated by the college a few days before they tried to kick her out.

The excuse the college gave was that she did not press charges so they had to act as if the incident did not occur.
