I think the fact that the DS has manufactured this false pathetic misanthropic persona is interesting. I also think the fact that he writes things -- "periods are unnatural and gross" -- that he doesn't believe, kind of pokes fun at the inanity of sexist dudes. Then he'll talk about his tiny penis, or the insecurities that lead women to do stupid things…his blog manages to keep my brain occupied in a way that none of those other blogs do, because it is obviously not the work of a misogynist. It's the work of a twentysomething hipster dude who has a lot of things to say but no real outlet or reason or language with which to say any of it earnestly. Think "Gee, I wonder why women get raped" on the American Apparel billboard. Some people were actually offended by that.

The problem is that maybe 10% of his readers get what he's saying. In another era, the DS would be a zine. It wouldn't have access to the endless string of celebrity photos that keeps the traffic flowing in, it wouldn't risk having an audience predominated by people he constantly needs to shock and alienate in order to remind everyone not to take him seriously…it would be different. However, the celebrity photo blog is the medium, and compared to the unexamined/automatic/idiotic/illiterate misogyny of Egotastic and Perez and JustJared and IDLYITW, the piss-drunk/fleshed-out/hyperbolic/rambling/self-hating misogyny of DS is an interesting antidote. To me, anyway.

Anyway, so that leaves me with the bigger issue that I still can't quite wrap my head around of the Upskirt shot, the obsessive monitoring of celebrity weight fluctuations on The Skinny Website, the unrelenting accusations that X celeb "looks like a man" on IDLYITW. This is the kind of stuff that leaves me speechless, that makes my head spin, that makes me really fear for the future of civilization. I don't think slapping these guys on the wrist with a "sentence" is necessarily the right tactic. Maybe an extended therapy with the week's worst offender is in order. But maybe that's too kind.
