I've always been extremely sympathetic to severely mentally-ill people, as my mother works in the mental-health field and witnesses daily the sadness and hopelessness of her "folks." Even when they are getting "help" (which, for most of these people, without family or any other support, is pretty pathetic) they are extremely fragile. I cannot imagine any of them living the kind of life Britney is subjected to, and wouldn't wish it on anyone.

Britney has an illness. She simultaneously courts the paps and tries to play and antagonize them- that's bipolar for you. And she's even cozying up to one now, and that can't end well. For a severely mentally-ill individual, she is disintigrating and literally dying in front of us and we want to see pics of her blood soaked privates. Great.

I realize that there are other celebs who grew up in similar circumstances (Christina Aguilera, perhaps?) and I don't know the exact factors that dictate that Britney goes nuts and Christina turns into a relatively put-together, confident, private, and happy woman, but I guarantee you those factors are there and they are not just that Britney has some sort of essential failing as a human being. She learned this shit from those around her, as well as probably being influenced by some very unbalanced brain chemistry and drug intake, and when someone is so clearly suffering outrageously and hurtling toward disaster, I am not OK with merely about their character flaws; this is a human being, destroyed. What a horrible thing to have happen.

FWIW, It's best to remember that Jezebel is a Gawker Media site and Gawker sites typically specialize in snark and cynicism. I mean, Defamer's treatment of Hollywood stars is just brutal (note their current lawsuit-baiting use of the Tom Cruise video). I visit Jezebel and other Gawker sites for a quick laugh during a stressful workday - sometimes the Jezz posts and their comments raise my blood pressure but I still admire the staff's writing that is sharp 9 times outta 10.

As for this Spears post, it has a mixed message. The author criticizes America's Spears obsession and highlights its absurdity via the period shots and the AP's frozen, microwavable obituary for her - BUT, the post still offers a link to the said photos and humors the notion of a Spears obit contest. My impression finds that the post appears to both cast stones upon the sin and feed it.

As for this post, Moe I actually thought it was a pretty good summation of the state of fame, narcissism and society, and I didn't find it offensive because this constant Britney inundation is making us all feel indifferent, which is worse than hate,and whoa, how did this come to be?

Without hospitalization, she won't get an accurate diagnosis and the life-saving help she surely needs. Even if you don't care what happens to her, think about her two little boys. They might grow up without a mother...and no one will be able to justify why their mom did not receive they help she needs.

I have nothing even approaching contempt for Britney Spears. Just a sad void from the relentless onslaught of images of a poor girl who never got to be a real person. The point was not that she is "worthy of less than hate" but that that is pretty much what the culture seems to have decided. Sure you find these photos distasteful, but are they as viscerally disturbing as, I dunno, the photos of Saddam Hussein after being yanked from his spider hole, or the Abu Ghraib prisoner with the underwear over his head? Not really, and it's not because there's nothing shameful about having your period. It's something more fucked up than that. Maybe it's the decision as a culture to reward with fame those who sacrifice their senses of shame. I dunno. But yeah, that was not written with contempt. It was written with sadness.

As a final note, I have written probably more about Benazir Bhutto than Britney Spears, though that's just because Britney generally ain't my beat.
