In the US and non-adult UK editions, they are marketed to middle grade readers primarily. Zindel is marketed to high schoolers.

Apparently, in England, they publish two sets of the HP books...one with kids' book-illustration on the cover, and an adult version that is the SAME story, but with a more 'adult-paperbackbook' cover.

That way your friends didn't catch on that you were reading a kid's book. ;)

They're both printed on paper and marketed to people below the age of 20, so they are fair comparisons?

I love the Paul Zindel books I've read, but when the only way you can think to sell him is to rip apart another perfectly fine work of fiction, it doesn't speak well of your taste, so your recommendation? IGNORING IT.

I think I read this book, but, honestly, the post writer threw me off with the pointless HP hate that I'm not sure anymore. I've read Phoenix and the Carpet, as well as other Nesbit books, and tons of other British children's lit (I love my book addicted family, my UK aunts and grandfather sent me books for every b-day and xmas), and I don't know what the fuck she's going on about here.

Any chance of a Noel Streatfield-o-rama post? I loved those books, and I am going batty trying to find the BBC Ballet Shoes adaptaion on the web. Stupid inability to figure out bitstreamming, grr.

And I was an innocent child just having arrived from the former Soviet Union. I didn't get it at the time and chalked it up to cultural differences and WESTERN DECADENCE. Now I'm thinking it was just a bit dated - the book was originally published in 1969 and I read it in the late 90s.

Having gone to look up the pub date on Amazon, I notice that there are only 3 copies left in stock. Jezzies are buying out this piece of middle school nostalgia!

I might cry now. I've been here over a year, and I can't charge a $4 part to fix the sink in one of the TWO bathrooms in the building???

It was one of those busted old paperbacks tucked away in a bookshelf in my classroom and it felt like a wonderful little secret back then, 'cause it felt just way more "adult" than anything my peers were reading at the time. There are very few books that as an adult can cause that same sort of private, subversive glee, although I do admit to feeling the blood rush to my head (and other places) a little when I read Georges Bataille's Story of the Eye one rainy afternoon in my college library. Uhh... totally not young adult, but, like I said, it's hard to find those little hidden pleasures as a real adult anymore.

Gladly, I have a young fiction reader in the house, so I get to re-read all my old favourites, and find new goodies too. We just went and renewed our library cards this week!

Even if I didn't have a young fiction reader in the house, I'd still re-read them on my own. The last time I read a Beverly Cleary book (not that long ago) I bawled my head off. Ah, Ramona. Such a bittersweet chile.

And regardless of the hot or cold feelings toward the H.P. juggernaut, the simple fact that it got so many kids interested in reading (a few of those books are gakkingly big - 666 pages, give or take a few satans) is a remarkable achievement in our digital times.

My favorite's The Pigman, but every time I pick up My Darling, My Hamburger I love it a little more. I was definitely a Maggie in high school (and college) -- without a Liz, I was invisible. With a Liz, I could be, erm, ushered into the occasional act of rebellion. But I always needed that push from whomever was my token wild(ish) friend at the time.

I also recommend Zindel's play, The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-In-The-Moon Marigolds (I bow to his titles). I performed a monologue from it way back in my drama geek days. Lines of it still come back to me from time to time, and when they do (natch, at inopportune times like work meetings), I get a little weepy. It's a gorgeous play.

I spent $30 on Anne of Green Gables books last weekend and have been reading them on the plane on my way to work. Everyone keeps dirty looking me.

My day still sucks, and the sink in the bathroom in my office is broken, and I called maintenence a MONTH ago to fix it. I got mad, and fixed it myself. I am very proud, considering I had to take apart all the pipes to do it. My boss was not impressed. He isn't very nice.

I waited for this all day, no lie, and now I'm going to re-read the original YA thread and order a bunch of shit on Ebay. WOO BOOKS!!!
