@treecut: I am no expert, but I think that it has a lot to do with distinguishing yourself from the flock and drawing attention to yourself. In Japan both men and women pay close attention to their appearance, and as a result a lot of people look great every day. If you are average looking, or don't have the money for tons of new clothes all the time, you have to do something to stand out from the crowd.

We - as 'non-Japanese' - are totally misreading this.

Kegadora came out of the anime scene, NOT the fetish scene. Of course, we can debate the obvious sexism in anime, but the 'injured idol' followers are emulating the injuries of their favorite heroines. These female characters are seen as being brave and selfless, not the typical pathetic damsels-in-distress.

There IS a medical fetish/bondge scene, especially in London and Berlin, but that is a totally different thing. The costuming and psychology is wildly different. The Japanese anime fans are dressing for themselves, not for the masked punters who attend fetish parties.

I've been hearing about this broken doll fetish for years (yeah, in gender study classes, but whatever). I see it as kind of being in the same tradition as a lot of the aesthetics in japanese culture that fetishize the mistreatment of women.
