As a former member of the LDS church and a daily consumer of all things Jezzie, I find myself totally dismayed by all the anti-Mormon judging on this site. Kind of like when someone badmouths your little brother. Sure, he's a little shit, but the minute someone not you says so, you jump down their throat. Thus my relationship with my former religion: so many things about it suck (seriously), but there was some good there too, something that only one raised in it would probably understand. Heigl is non-practicing, but is probably positive in interviews about Mormonism because her family is still Mormon. Reading the "But she's Mormon" comments take me straight back to high school. Catty and judgmental and not really having anything to do with the topic at hand.

That said, why not give props to Heigl for even bringing the word sexist into the conversation. This is Hollywood we're talking about, where there are no feminists, just 'humanists.' (Hi, Drew Barrymore!)

I don't have a problem with her speaking her mind. I have a problem with her going against what she believed in and doing it anyway. You're a strong, independent woman. Good for you. But how strong and independent can you be if you're acting weak and dependent? It just doesn't make any sense. If you don't like the script DON'T DO IT. Portman didn't want to play Lolita when she was a teen and she didn't. Her career hasn't suffered for it. Katie is a complainer and a whiner. She seems to be one of those women who thinks that sharing her 'strong' opinion makes her seem strong, but in reality it makes her seem abrasive and shrewish. There's a way to get your point across without screaming it at people.
I, too, respect her right to her opinion, but live the example you're trying to set.

@stuntfrau: I agree with the bulk of your comments. My only issue with her comments regarding her career is that she made them too soon. Maybe 5 years from now once she's done a few more movies (or completely out of the limelight) would it not be possible career suicide.

@bringinghomebacon: Oh yeah, her agent = not thrilled. If she has a decent PR flack we'll be hearing something by the end of the week.

I don't particularly like Heigl. I used to like her character on Grey's back in Seasons 1 & 2, but Season 3 was just So. Much. Crap both on and off set. I was appalled at her Stand By Your Man act with TR Knight. Sure, they're friends and the slur was terrible, etc. But it was totally unprofessional for her to speak out the way she did when everyone was trying to fix things behind the scenes. She proved then that she's a Grade A shit stirrer, and a smug one at that. Furthermore, it made TR Knight look like a poor widdle boy who couldn't defend himself. They both came off as seeming unprofessional, and he became the martyr of all homophobia in Hollywood.

Plus, she OFFERED to do more scenes with him since TPTB were trying to make fewer scenes with TR and Isiash Washington. Unfortunately, the story line that popped up as a quick fix was Izzie and George having an affair, because otherwise (with him getting married) there wasn't really anything else going on with George's storyline aside from his groing friendship with Burke.

And lest we not forget about her unprofessional handling of her contract negotiations with ABC over Grey's - taking it public to use as leverage for more $$$ because she felt she was on par with Ellen Pompeo and Sandra Oh.

So, yeah KH comes off like a huge, ungrateful whiner all around.

It's because of her that I have not seen 'Knocked Up'. I respect her right to her opinion, although I feel it was ill-advised for her to make it at this point in her career.

I haven't seen Knocked Up or Superbad, did see 40-Year-Old Virgin and thought it quite funny. I have mixed feelings about seeing Knocked Up, ones I may have to resolve just by renting the darn thing.

Now, this next point may not come out right, and it may not make sense. But I'll give it a shot anyway. Acting is a sexist business. I tried doing the theatre thing for a while in college, but it just about crushed my soul. I couldn't take it. If you were skinny and petite and pretty, you got the parts. If you weren't, you might occasionally luck out and get a part as a crazy woman, or perhaps a "character actress." Now, a guy could be fat and "ugly" and still be a leading man. A girl? Not so much. I'm not saying it never happened, but it seemed very rare. And of course, a lot of the plays had largely male casts and were almost always directed by males.

This happened years ago, and I know that even if I looked like Katherine Heigl and had the acting ability of Meryl Streep, my odds of ever having steady work, much less being a superstar, would be about one in a gazillion.

People who do make it must really really want it and must be willing to live with the double standard. So I don't really fault Heigl for saying what she said. She said 98 percent of the time she loved it, right? That's a lot better percentage than the girls who star in movies like "Fast and the Furious 8: Big Wheels and Big Boobs" probably get. And even then, those girls are probably glad not to be waitressing or something.

I echo the sentiment that Apatow's work has never seemed particularly female-friendly to me. His stuff has always clearly seemed to be aimed at ball-scratching fratboys to me, especially Superbad. The "Let's "grey rape" some lucky drunk girl!" movie. Nor did I like Knocked Up's heavy-handed theme that "you can only be a grown-up if you have kids!"

I get people's point that slagging her big break is a bit hypocritical. However, I also echo the point that she's allowed to have a opinion. The fact that she looks like she looks is no reason to beat on her every time she opens her mouth. If it were a less conventionally attractive female being mouthy you'd all probably be tripping over yourselves to give her a standing O. Doesn't feminism apply to ALL women anymore?

@fellow-ette: I understand the point your making - I have made the same complaint, but in this circumstance I believe it's the hypocrisy of this individual (that she is female is almost beside the point - it just makes her a more obvious target) that is under scrutiny.

She has participated in several projects and has signed on to future projects that propel an archaic/sexist image of women - that is well and good for her as an individual person - but if she is going to be concerned about sexism then she can't cherry pick which projects are potentially sexist - especially when most of the projects she undertakes undermine feminist ideals on a broader scope.

When I really examine this topic under the microscope of feminism, I feel like it can be compare to blackface, although not as overtly wrong. In the early days of cinema blacks were represented in cinema only by white actors who donned garish, exaggerated make up - only in this case women are donning exaggerated personas and excepting stereotypical/demining roles...sad to see women excepting this for themselves...

The whole "people don't like their jobs" argument is fine when applied to most jobs, but questionable when applied to acting. My husband is a working actor. To be publicly critical, even mildly so, is odd.

Most likely, if she has any sense at all, she discussed some of this with Apatow and is either clueless enough not to couch her remarks in such a way as to make that clear in the interview, OR the reporter left that part out. But imagine if you had a job then publicly criticized your employer, say on your blog, in a way that is pejorative -- sexist is never a compliment -- would you later expect to be rehired? And again, a film is a couple hours of entertainment (if you're lucky) to expect it to be all things to all people is silly. But an actor saying "It was hard for me to love that movie" about any project that gave them such success and was so popular makes me question why it has to be said and what she thinks this says to people who enjoyed the movie.

The idea that periods, pregnancies, menopause turn a woman's brain to mush is maddening. Positively maddening. From what I remember, Jezebel has reported quite a few times that there just simply aren't independent empowered female roles. And if there are, they somehow go to Julia Roberts. After 40 Year Old Virgin, any actor who turned down Knocked Up would be committing career suicide. And like someone mentioned on here, work is work. Not everyone likes their job.

Now, arguably, because an actor's or actress's is so high profile, they have more responsibility to portray people in the 'right' light. And as for the sexist values in Knocked Up, a lot of it has more to do with writers not knowing how to write women, then writers actually wanting to demean them.

Most writers are 30-50 year old white male geeks. So their perspectives are going to be a bit one sided. As for Apatow, he's just one of many. And Superbad wasn't written by Apatow, but by Seth Rogan. "And I won't get into the 'Ew, women bleed from down there!' immaturity that was Superbad." And in its defense, the immature reaction mostly came from the 17/18 year old anti-social kid.

She called it 'a little sexist.' And it was. Not to a staggering degree, certainly not as bad as most other crap out there, but yeah. A little sexist. No actor knows how a movie's going to turn out once it's shot (with a healthy dose of ad lib, if it's Apatow), edited, marketed. Most actors also have a clause keeping them from dissing their own movie for a certain period fo time after release. And lastly- she could have been saying this all along. It just wasn't what the reporter was looking for.

I love Apatow's stuff, especially that the women get (a few of) their very own jokes. He's been working within the confines of the system for a very long time. I remember him being depressed on Undeclared because the only notes he got had to do with making the female characters 'hotter.'

As I said earlier, I thought, if anything, it was a show about a put together, ambitious, beautiful, successful woman who knows what she is doing thrown together with a loser guy: it definitely happens.

The men in the movie, I'd venture to say all of them, are unabashedly losers who can't get their lives together and have no interest in doing so; the exception being Seth Rogan, who would not change without a woman prodding him to be more successful. While the women aren't perfect, their interpretation of how things should be winds up prevailing: Paul Rudd and his wife's marriage, Kate and Seth settling down, etc.

The women were pretty shrewish, esp the one minute we got of her "mother", I'm assuming that's who that was; the men were overgrown babies; and the premise that it's a great idea to go ahead and see that one-night stand pregancy through to its end when you are in your early 20s and just starting your career was ludicrous to me. The E stuff was funny, as was the bar scene, but really, that's about it.

Everyone is mentioning what she said, but no one has said a thing about this corresponding picture. Yes I know she is suppose to hark back to the pinup girl days, but isn't being portrayed as a pinup girl just as bad as the role you played in knocked up? (btw, I loved the movie.) Just an observation.

You know I loved her character on GA for the first two seasons and then the last season just sucked. This, what looks to be an abbreviated season, her character is tolerable, but still not what I grew to love. Maybe it is a sign of her changing personality revealed in the article. Who knows.

She wants to work, period; hopefully that means she can draw the line at porn/Hostel-type movies, but if she waits for a strong "progressively" portrayed female lead (or even small character) in a movie, she'll be to old to glance at, by Hollywood standards.

Everyone has to put up with some distasteful/less-than-serious roles before they can throw their weight around, but that doesn't mean she doesn't have a valid complaint. Hell, even Judd kind of pointed out (I LOVE his movies) that the women got the short end of the stick...at the expense of the overgrown frat boys who inexplicably won them over.

I gotta say, I'm a little creeped out by all the comments on a supposedly feminist blog calling a woman a bitch, for what exactly? I don't know if any of you have noticed, but it's really, really hard for female actors to get work where they're not just playing, "girlfriend of," "wife of," etc. and for a talented, ambitious actress, that must be frustrating as hell. Heck, Jezebel has a whole category called, "Victms, Whores and Doormats," addressing this very issue.

Heigl was shwerd enough to realize doing "Knocked Up" was good for her career, but she was also smart enough to realize that it didn't portray women realistically. Also, as a former lover of "Grey's Anatomy," her character is the least annoying, but even I had to stop watching when she started doing George. Once again, she's smart enough to realize that maybe wasn't the best thing for her character's story line. As other commenters have noted, work is work. Look at the careers of A-List woman actors and you'll see a lot of not very feminist crap on their resumes as well.

ALL the characters in that movie are a bit fucked up, no one is the hero or the good guy/girl. They all have interpersonal issues, problems communicating, and show a lack of empathy. Sure, the female characters may be overbearing and melodramatic but the guys are all passive-aggressive and lack direction.

It's a shitty truth that women can't get movies made out there, but Juno looks promising (and it has the fantastic Michael Cera in it.) I think he did an alright job with Freaks and Geeks with Paul Feig. Lindsay was pretty badass and a feminist, Kim Kelly was gold, and let's not forget Ken's love for Tuba Girl.

The 40-Year-Old Virgin was a long enough movie as it was, and to add a storyline about Keener's girlfriends would be sort of dumb. The movie was about a dude, it was funny, yeah it plays into stereotypes but it's hard to find a comedy that doesn't fall into the stereotype dungeon.

The thing about Judd Apatow is that he makes films that are offensive, crude and absurd but manages to turn them into something more than that. So Knocked Up was great and Katherine is an idiot. Dude, Apatow is the last person in Hollywood I would want to piss off. This is really two fold...

First, he can get any movie he wants made and I would guess has casting veto on every one of his movies. And, since I think he is producing every movie being made in the next 3 years, well, Katie should shut her trap.

Second, ever notice how everyone in Judd's movies seem to be the same people. He seems to be a big proponent of taking care of family. Don't piss off Daddy because all of Hollywood may follow.

BTW, I must admit there were times in my pregnancy when I was a bit humorless and uptight. At the same time he was not going through all the physical changes and remained a bit goofy and fun-loving. Go figure.

The issue I would have with her movie would be the selling of the idea that a one night stand turns out to be a stand up guy,yes it's formula guy meets girl, loses girl, gets girl back crap with the happily-ever-after, but I know waaaaay too many women who are single moms-never married-man wants nothing to do with her or the baby. sad.
