As a female photographer I have a huge suspicion that is the same photograph (before & after retouch), and it is really easy to do what they did (remove hand from lap and put arm down behind her). It is time consuming but can be done fairly easily. I watched the before's & after's several times, and I really do believe it is the same image.

What hasn't been touched upon yet, and I run into it a lot...

Don't you think that the celebrities want their images retouched? Do you know how many women I get in my studio that want me to retouch their images, remove wrinkles, make them look thinner, whiten their teeth... ad nausium? We not only do this to ourselves, we do this to the younger generations so that they can do this to themselves.

I took a picture of my aunt and she insisted on everything being retouched to make her look very thin. Even requesting wierd things like the line on the arm (you know on posterior portion of the arm - between the radius and the unlna) - I had to argue her out of that one, because it would just make her arm look too wierd. I had to actually take the line out and show her how wierd it looked. We finally negotiated, to put it back in but minimize it some (she thought tha line made her arm look fat when in fact it is just a natural feature of our body).

The other thing I wanted to mention is that this particular image is a sad commentary not only on photoshopping images, but also on what we are doing!

Why, oh why, would a photographer want to put her arm that is frame right in such a dominant position, and make it look huge, and then photoshop it to make it small?! It's not only a commentary on body image, but a commentary on those taking the images. She should have been posed better, to de-emphasize her back & her arm... rather than make them prominant. Softer lighting that didn't emphasize every line & wrinkle. So in a way the statement about making the original image look worse, is true to a point. Pretty much what the other photographer that chimed in said.

And yes, it is just as easy to smooth fine lines & wrinkles in photoshop as it is to intensify them, add more, etc....

When will we all get to that point that when we have our photos taken, that we aren't concerned about having them retouched?... Even the big zit on our face... it's natural beauty, right? Where do you draw the line? Do you say no retouching, only mild retouching? What is acceptable? And lets not forget even the simple in camera things that don't even require photoshop! We have soft focus lenses to soften lines & wrinkles, as well as other imperfections. Different lighting techniques to form the body in the use of light/shadow. HP came out with a camera that actually has a function IN CAMERA to slim people down (using optics to thin & stretch the image - giving an optical illusion of slimming down the subject). She looks very slouched in the original ... no doubt there was artwork of Michelangelo proportions done no matter what, but I wonder if Nebraska03 is right and the original is another photo from the same shoot.

Someone used a photo of me for this missing-children campaign in Australia (apparently from behind I look like a 12-year-old boy) and photoshopped my arms OFF. Apparently in the digital world limbs come and go like lightning.

I have taught photography for over 25 years. About 15 years ago I noticed how much women's images were manipulated as PhotoShop came into general use. Since then- nearly EVERY cover showing a woman has been retouched. Before PhotoShop- Hollywood stars were retouched- airbrushed by hand- but this was mostly facial cosmetics- the vast changes in body weight were not possible.

the face and make it smooth and even colored in real time, nearly 30 frames of automatic retouching per second.
Its not all bad- here's a happy ending....
I recently did some PShop for a photographer friend- she needed a triple chin removed from a lady in a family photo. I met this same lady with the triple chins a few days later in a social setting and realized she had lost about 60 pounds since the images were taken. She looked great- no triple chin. In this case the PhotoShopped version reflected the real woman!

A bunch of women saying Faith Hill looks fine without the retouching sadly misses the point. Do you think women are starving themselves to make their girlfriends happy? Who cares what women think? The point of makeovers, makeup and make believe is looking better for men. Women buy Redbook, but the downstream customer for the goods is a man. You want to change the way women are portrayed, then figure out how to change men.

Men's "health" magazines are the same. Look at the covers of those and ask yourself if men are any better off. Instead of "starved" as an ideal, we have "muscled like an ape". Bring on the protein shakes, the supplements, the hormone precursors, the muscle machines. And yes, steroids themselves when slaving in the gym isn't enough.

All of these actresses are liars, in one way or another. They wear high heels; they ain't that tall. They wear make-up and lipstick; their face don't look like that. As a professional photographer for the past 30 years, I want to add my two cents on the Faith Hill "PhotoShop scandal".

First of all, as at least one other poster has mentioned, those are two different poses, taken from the same series. The first one has her leaning in a bit too much, and the photographer most likely asked her to relax and lean back a bit. Secondly, the bags under her eyes, while retouched in the cover shot, shouldn't have looked that bad in the first place. The lighting in the shot was badly placed, adding to the darkness. Besides that, the lighting in the first shot is very harsh, and may have been adjusted for the second shot.

That's not to say that retouching wasn't used. It obviously was. But just not to the extent claimed in the article.

I think while the pictures are very very close, they are 2 different shots. They appear to have a fan, probably a low setting. The lighting is different, she is sitting up more. The hair on the right side of her face appears fuller. Her right hand is on the floor by her leg in the mag cover but her left arm...damn, what did they do? are there pinchers on the end of it now? They definitely went a bit overboard. Faith is a beautiful woman, period. They should have just told her to stay put, sit up straighter though, retouched her face a little, kept the freckles, and left everything else as is. She should be proud she looks as good as she does.

But some of the responses from you peeps is DAMN funny!

I think that REDBOOK should be ashamed for the "false advertising" and unrealistic image. I wondered when I bought that magazine, if it was a photo of Faith Hill say circa 1995? I personally think that Jezebel.com has done us all a tremendous favor, in this day and age where Hollywood is a size 0 and the starlets of old Hollywood averaged a size 6, I think we have done nothing but perpetuate an unhealthy image to women and girls everywhere. I challenge other magazines to take a stand and publish ACTUAL photos without the photoshop images.

I knew about this 'dirty little secret' years ago, but this is a horrible example of going overboard with the photo editing. Faith doesn't look younger or better in the cover photo, she looks anatomically incorrect. A woman's arm is not the same width from shoulder to wrist!

I am sorry, but I think that she might look better before they did the photo shop. She has such natural beauty it's unbelievable. Are you kidding me about the crows feet? She has 3 children and a huge career, what do you do badteaparty? You can't always believe what you hear. I love to see pictures of celebrities, who aren't touched up. I am amazed at how well she looks before the touch up. No one can really deny that she is very beautiful in the untouched picture. If you do then is must be out of pure jealousy. How mean can we really get as a society that we are criticizing celebrities for looking a little less than perfect. I can honestly say that I would have no problem looking like the unedited Faith on any given day. Tim is a lucky man to have such a gorgeous woman!

Maybe I'm one of the last women out here that is enjoying my newly added grey hairs, little wrinkles and the fuller look of my body now that I've hit my mid 40's. But I, personally, think the unretouched look is much more flattering. She's a beautiful woman, she needs no 'enhancement' or 'help' to prove it.

This skinny plasticine look that I see on every magazine cover is freakish. It reminds me of an old Twilight Zone episode where the 'normal' people undergo plastic surgery to look like freaks because the media has them convinced that the freaks are the norm. That episode was in black and white--must have been the 60's....they weren't too far off from the future's truth.

It just goes to show how "tamed, trained, and domesticated" most of us are if we are using the word "backfat" to describe what is in actuality just a back! Do you think Faith Hill wears anything more than a size 4? I seriously doubt she does in an industry where wearing a size 6 makes you tabloid fodder for celebrity blubber. I can understand the want to validate oneself by picking out the photoshopped bits and and critisizing and comparing, but all it means is you don't have back fat either! You are normal; so is she! Using 13 and 14 year olds, sexing them up, and making their faces up like adult women is the fashion spread norm. Why am I comparing myself to a child playing dress-up for thousands of dollars?! I do though, and it is sort of sick, no? Well, what I learned from this is that I would rather see the happy, smiling young mother on the cover rather than the product with the blank smile, and the eyes and expression of somone who isn't quite living, isn't quite dead, but is supposed "perfection." Reality is more beautiful than the dream.

I think that the photographer could have done enough to improve the photo just by having his subject in a better, less hunched up pose, and by using the correct lighting for the look that Redbook was trying to achieve. I think she looks beautiful in both pictures, and this is much ado about nothing. We should all be so lucky!

Has anyone seen the digitally altered photo of what is allegedly Victoria Beckham's deformed leg (the deformed leg that doesn't exist)? It's much better to see photoshopping or editing used for the better and not to make pictures worse or truly embarrassing (Faith's pictures aren't) for people.

Come on everyone. When was there ever a cover that WASN'T untouched. Just a shame that we "expect" everyone to be bones, unlived life shown on faces of those we see, oh and God Forbid we have backfat...or lifelines around the faces of these celebs.
Not sure what type of life she has to have soo many lines but who cares,,,really. I don't care if she has some or not.
As long as she isn't a bag of bones, total botox, slilicone and or half hacked away from a surgeons tools.
Good for her..bad for those who think the published cover photo is ideal.

I think you all are crazy. She was beautiful before she was photo shop. And the fact that one girl was 37 and didn't have crows feet doesn't matter. Age, plus stress, plus sun, plus health, plus diet, plus life style, plus genes equals age not age. There are a few choice words for a few that I can't use. So I will just say this. The standard of beauty these days is alarming and unhealthy... Youngs girls make themselves sick and are overly depressed and obsessed about how they look. There are more important things to be worried about. Sure some of you will say well your only saying beauty doesn't matter because you must be ugly or fat or something. Nope... Just intelligant. Thank god for articles like these, not to expose the star and make them feel crappy about their looks, but to show people, "Hey your expectations of a normal human beings looks are a little skewed." Lord knows magizines will do anything to hide ANY imperfection.

I am a model and have been for 27 years... I look like dogshit if the photographer is no good... they now RELY on PhotoShop to fix what they can't capture. It's unfortunate ladies, but true. EVERY photo is retouched! Thanks to digital photography we can have a whole new body in about an hour... To hell with plastic surgery, this is much cheaper! ;OP

PS Faith is from my hometown, Florence, MS, NOT Star... (sounds good though doesn't it) And she has HUGE EARS> but she is a sweetheart.

I know women make themselves up to compete with other women not (as we men like to think) to actually attract men. These "forgeries" make at least women in committed relationships think that they have to look or act a certain way to remain interesting to their partners. The truth is that many of their partners lose interest when these "pursuits of perfection" become too large a distraction from the relationship.

To set the record straight, Jezebel is outting the magazine staff, not the celebs. Celeb has little if any input as to final cover look. Natl Geo got in trouble for photoshifting a pyramid hundreds of feet for the pathetic reason of fitting into cover format. What right does a editor claim when removing freckles and more.
Her eyes could have been properly lit in the original photo shoot. But why remove natural musculature to her back? Her body on the finished cover looks sickly thin.
You know what MrPhotoshopper, give me the real Faith and not your interpretation. And photographers, if you can, put a minor-edits-only clause in your contract.

There's no way that those two pictures are the same - take some time to look and you'll notice they're 2 different pictures.. I agree they did a lot of touching up - but look at the arms.. did they just place an arm in the touched up photo? and did they straighten her back more in the touched up photo?

If guys only knew what they do to the photos in men's magazines, yikes, honestly anyone could be made to look good in playboy, seriously. They alter faces, body parts, size, use different people's body parts, it is crazy!!!!!

Finally, stars always want to bitch about the paparazi following them around. This is proof that if they went out dressed in real clothes and shopped in real stores and didn't continually scream "Look at me! Why are so many of the responses to this post centered around nitpicking the body parts that were photoshopped, seeking to validate them through claiming, "Oh, they looked just fine before the photoshop, really!", rather than pulling the camera out of Faith's crooks and crannies and displaying appropriate shock that her person was violated through digitalized deformity? Who cares about sitting here and trying to be "ok" with Faith's laughter-lines either by photoshopping them away or by complimenting them to death. She is a person, a whole person, and the image of her was butchered. I think that's pretty brutal.

Aside from the obvious fixes for the crow's feet and the under eye circles, a lot of what they are fixing is the idiotic choice to have her perched backwards on a white leather sofa. The photographer and editor are to blame here. Faith Hill does not have back fat, she is hunched over trying not to slip off the couch. Ditto the arm which is in an unnatural position and just looks odd.

As a artist with a background in anatomy -- I think this is priceless. They've given her a severe case of Scoliosis by whittling her back into an hourglass curve! They've also eliminated all the "slow" lines of the body (the concave areas where the body can bend on itself) to eliminate any hint of actual flesh on thiose bones. It's Mannerism at it's best -- the artificial trumping the natural.

I've worked with the lady and she is a great talent, but like most female stars she is very concerned about her appearance, and undoubtedly had a big say in what pictures would appear on the cover. @ConnPossible: That's cuz they had to silo her hair on top of the REDBOOK title. It's still a tricky science to make it look good; if they're still working in quark it's even more difficult. InDesign works better with psds/silos. I hated dealing with hair. Best to put a ton in: fill it out. They could have done a better job...

She looks like the typical overly tanned gone-to-fat desperate-to-look-younger (dressed inappropriately for her age) middle-aged woman who was once unimaginatively hot-ish. In other words, pre-photoshop, she looks a lot like me. Prettier hair though, but yes, thinning; and maybe the camera does add 10 lbs because i think she's quite a bit more of a fatty than me too. Personally, I can never get past the distorted look of her "WHAAATTTTT??!!" into the camera when she was outraged at not being named Country Enertainer of the Year, particularly as she was already taking bows before the name was announced ... and losing to Carrie Underwood who is younger, hotter, and ostensibly more talented.
