Sometimes, people are just jackasses about relationships vs friendships.

I freak out whenever one of my long-single friends gets a new dating person. Because inevitably, they will stop hanging out with me. When they break up, BAM, it's like nothing ever happened. But hey, I'm not a substitute for a "real" relationship, so that shit doesn't fly anymore. If you can't be friends with me and have a relationship, then you're not a friend, no matter what sex you are. I feel like this may be more prominent in geek circles, because so many of them feel desperate, like no one will love them ever, even though that's statistically very unlikely.

Hey, I am pretty ugly and I have a happy relationship. I tell you now, my power over teenage boys lay in one thing: one time, I stabbed a guy in the hand with a pen. There's a huge backstory that isn't that interesting and semi-justifies what I did, but I got known as "the psycho" and that was all the power I had. Three guys cornered me once, and had they not had to go to football practice, I am not sure what they would have done. My "psycho" currency didn't go far when I was outnumbered. #dailyfail

I kind of fell into this job by mistake, and I said upthread that I'm not actually a teacher, just work closely with students in a school as a career counselor, but for a while I considered going to get my teaching license. I REALLY had to examine whether that's what I wanted to do or not, because I've always been intelligent in school and could go be a doctor or lawyer or something with prestige (I also realized being recognized by others as being intelligent is a value I have), and the idea of being a teacher, which is not very respected, and thinking of the friends in college who were IDIOTS in the education majors made me feel REALLY uneasy. Then I remembered that I really love kids, and I like to hang out with them.

I wish more people like your sister would get into education. #openthread
