Women Need More Sleep Than Men, Apparently
LatestLadies, you can officially tell everyone to BACK OFF about how grumpy you are in the morning!
Turns out, our old friend science says you need more sleep than that man next to you who was snoring and muttering about cheese calzones and the Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders all night in his sleep.
In this edition of our favorite game here at Jezebel, “A Study Has Found,” a study at Duke headed up by “sleep doctor” (WHOA THIS IS THE COOLEST JOB EVER) Dr. Michael Breus discovered a number of eye-opening things about women and the repercussions of a lack of sleep. Particularly worrying is the study’s finding that women might contend with a higher amount of stress (and worse) from lack of sleep:
Lack of proper sleep leads to various health problems in women such as risk of developing heart diseases, depression, psychological problems and strokes Dr Breus and his research team also found that men do not develop the ailments that afflict women when they are sleep deprived.
“We found that women had more depression, women had more anger, and women had more hostility early in the morning,” said Dr Breus, according to The Australian.
Breus said women should take naps for about 25-90 minutes, but advised that longer naps could make you even more tired.
“One of the major functions of sleep is to allow the brain to recover and repair itself,” said Professor Jim Horne, director of the Sleep Research Centre at Loughborough University, England, via the news organization.”During deep sleep, the cortex – the part of the brain responsible for thought, memory, language and so on – disengages from the senses and goes into recovery mode. “The more of your brain you use during the day, the more of it that needs to recover and, consequently, the more sleep you need.”
I don’t know if the science behind this study by the guy who has a website calling himself “The Sleep Doctor” is sound or total sexist nonsense, but for right now, all I know is I have an awesome bullshit excuse to go nap in the middle of my work shift. See you all on the flip side of my 25-90 minute nap; kthanx.
