Chatter about Rep. Barney Frank's schlumpy attire on the House floor earlier this week prompted the Washington Post to take a look back at other sartorial scandals in D.C., including the controversy over the first woman to step onto the House floor in pants. On Dec. 24, 1969, Rep. Charlotte T. Reid (R-Ill.) caused a stir when she showed up in "a black wool, bell-bottomed pantsuit." Men flocked to see the scandalous sight and most had nothing nice to say, but Reid said, "(Rep.) Gerald Ford told me he thought it was great and I should do it more often." American Antiquarian's latest exhibit "Beauty, Virtue, & Vice: Images of Women in Nineteenth-Century American Prints" features this map called "The Open Country of a Woman's Heart" by D. W. Kellogg. British Pathé has unearthed another gem featuring fashions from1950s and this time, what they found were one thousand couture umbrellas. With so many options to be modeled, the designers of said umbrellas really had to be really inventive with their ideas in order for them to stand out. As a result, we're shown gold lamé models trimmed in mink, and umbrellas adorned with flowers, mirrors, and functional music boxes at the bottoms of them. Totally not functional during a rainstorm, but whatever. They didn't have rain back then. More »

British Pathe's latest treasure from the vaults is a beauty competition from the 1960s called the "Miss Fat and Beautiful" contest, in which a London store sought to find the perfect woman described as "a comfortable woman with the sort of statistics those old Dutch painters would have loved." Though the mere title of the competition would be considered offensive today, I doubt that the competition was meant to be offensive or belittling in any way.
