Can you handle it? MTV's Total Request Live is, like, totally over! One cannot deny that it's the end of an era — albeit a mediocre era that allowed otherwise uptight stars to get down with the kids in studied expensive jeans-and-tee ensembles and, for New Yorkers, meant a bunch of screaming tourists clogging up 42nd Street for two hours while the Naked Cowboy pranced gamely behind them. Yes, of all the privations of our new reality, the lack of TRL's going to be relatively easy to bear. But for luminaries like Beyonce, Hilary Duff, Taylor Swift, and Vanessa Minnillo (to say nothing of Carson), this finale TRL was BIG and they celebrated by looking awful. • Amy Poehler is leaving Saturday Night Live! She'll step away after the November election to give birth to her first child, and she won't be coming back. "It's gonna be really hard — Boyz II Men hard — to say goodbye to yesterday," she says. "But like any good drug, you need to know when to put it down." Mariah Carey is flying high from her 18th #1 hit "Touch My Body," and she's been all over the place promoting her new album (Oprah yesterday, American Idol tonight), E=MC² which came out today. But remember when things were going so great in her career about seven years ago, specifically when she freaked out in the summer of 2001 from not sleeping? (Remember when Glitter was the first time we could all truly laugh after September 11?) Above is a clip from her July 2001 surprise appearance on TRL, in which she wore a skimpy outfit, handed out popsicles, and rambled about stuff that didn't make any sense. ("All I know is I just want one day off when I can go swimming and look at rainbows and like eat ice cream. And maybe like learn how to ride a bicycle.") A few days later, she checked into a mental facility. We're glad she's feeling a lot better and is back on top, but we kinda thought she was equally entertaining while hitting rock bottom. More »
