Last August, Ashley Baker, an editor from Glamour magazine, visited a law firm to speak about the dos and don'ts of corporate fashion. While commenting on a slide show, a picture of a woman sporting an Afro popped up, and Baker called it a real no-no. She said the same thing about dreadlocks, and suddenly a storm of bad press swarmed Glamour. Last October, Portƒolio's Jeff Bercovici wrote: "Ashley is no racist, just a young writer who said something glib without considering how it would sound to someone from a different background." Two months ago, Brenda McElmore went to her local salon, inside of a JC Penney in Downey, California, because she wanted to get her hair dyed black — she's got some gray at the temples. According to KTLA, the receptionist at the salon told her, "We don't do African-American hair." Ms. McElmore feels that she was denied service because she is black, and is now suing for racial discrimination (Gloria Allred is on the case). In a heartbreaking video (embedded after the jump), Ms. McElmore, on the verge of tears, says, "I'm a person of the '60s… It was shocking to hear them say this in this manner, in 2008." More »

A reader letter to advice columnist Dr. Tanya Byron was published in yesterday's Times of London. The question, from "Simone," reads, in part: "My six-year-old daughter has a problem that I fear may affect her social and psychological development, as well as her performance at school. She has developed a heavy growth of very dark hair on her legs, and she is very self-conscious about it… She has recently been invited to swimming parties, but makes excuses for why she shouldn't go. Are there any acceptable treatments for a child of this age?" Dr. Byron's response is over 1,000 words long and touches on heredity, femininity, feminism, the hair removal business and the dangers of learning to believe that the opinions of others about our bodies are less important than our own. Writer Liz Jones has a story in the Daily Mail in which she recounts her emotions surrounding the chopping-off of her waist-length hair. Jones calls her hair a "split-ended curtain behind which I could hide." She says "It was just a long, heavy, hairy version of a burka, out of which two big dark eyes would peep, nervously, at the world." At best, Jones was known as :"the girl with the long hair." At worst, she was called "the witch." Her husband hated her hair, telling her it felt like a horse's mane and made her look like "an old hag." She grew it longer just to spite him — and then she (thankfully!) divorced him. Then? Because she was "holding on" to her youth while "hurtling towards the age of 50," she got her hair cut. More »
