We can always rely on The New York Times to keep us updated on minor changes to our late night (or rather early morning) TV schedule, and today they're reporting that NBC is now running repeats of the fourth hour of the Today show (better known as Kathie Lee and Hoda Woman's Boozy Fun Time). NBC pulled Poker After Dark because the feds accused the show's sponsor of defrauding customers (ask your insomniac uncle with a gambling problem to explain) and since the network's executives are officially out of new ideas, they just swapped in a morning show and hoped no one would notice. NBC ran weeks of royal wedding coverage this summer. Obviously it wasn't enough, since the entire cast of the Today show was dressed as the royal family this morning. Ann Curry was Kate Middleton, Natalie Morales was Pippa, Matt Lauer was Prince William, and Al Roker was Prince Harry. Hoda and Kathie Lee were Eugenie and Beatrice. Savannah Guthrie had to switch genders and be Prince Charles. And in a twist, former cohost Meredith Vieira made a surprise appearance as Queen Elizabeth, with corgis in tow. As you may recall, Nancy Upton mocked American Apparel's "Next Big Thing" model search, then won the contest, then was informed that she was not the winner, then was invited to visit the company headquarters. Nancy was on the Today show this morning, explaining (again) why the wording of the contest prompted her to submit pictures of herself bathing in ranch dressing. "I found it really insulting," Upton said. It's great that 13-year-old Richard Bruffy has taken an interest in exercise. And we're not going to wring any hands about a kid pursuing something athletic that is usually associated with adults. That said: some of the words he chooses — "ridiculous goals," "perfection," and "perfect body" — are troubling. Isn't the "perfect" body one that functions properly? Abdominal definition and bulging biceps are not necessarily indicators of tip-top health. Some of Bruffy's ideas are consistent with the Adonis complex, also known as muscle dysmorphia. At least Bruffy works out with supervision from his dad, who is hopefully teaching the kid that no one is perfect, and imperfections are not failures or flaws. More »

It's not surprising that Janet Johnson and Michael Brown were seemingly exhausted and stunned, uttering one-word answers when they were interviewed by Ann Curry this morning on Today: Their new son, JaMichael Brown, came out of the womb weighing more than 16 pounds. He may be the largest baby ever born in Texas. JaMichael is two feet long, has a full head of hair, and a 17-inch chest. Well. Normally I'd not bat an eye at Nadya Suleman appearing on the Today Show — this is, after all, the program that interviews the Duggars every time they've been infected with another pregnancy — but this morning's segment was so positively insane that it really is worth noting. She of the gargantuan womb was in-studio with her 2½-year-old octuplets, who really are gorgeous, and one of the other kids (the poor dears really will be known as "the other ones" for most of their lives). The Today show actually sent a reporter — foreign correspondant Michelle Kosinski — to Florence to cover the arrival of Snooki, JWoww, The Situation and the rest. Though one Italian woman expressed disdain for the guidos ("They're full of tattoo. They're drunk. I think they are stupid"), the cast is being followed by a horde of townspeople, just like Colin Firth in Love, Actually. Except much less charming. Can the cameras capture any "reality" of how these kids act in a different country when they're treated like celebrities? Every dinner, club outing and sight-seeing experience is going to be carefully plotted by producers. You can tell, by the way Deena exclaims, "Why am I not allowed to ask?" when they pass a restaurant that they're under some strict rules and instructions, and don't have permission to do much. The whole thing seems like a clusterfuck. Meanwhile, Michelle Kosinski, who patronizingly corrects the mayor of Florence's pronunciation of "Snooki," actually says something to the effect of, "They're not allowed to shoot here, inside the magnificent Uffizi gallery… I'm from Jersey, and we're allowed!" This morning, Meredith Vieira announced that she is indeed leaving the Today show in June (as rumored). "I want to spend more [time] with my husband Richard, and my kids," she said. Her husband has written a book about the fact that he's coping with multiple sclerosis and colon cancer. Meredith also said: "I really hope to stay in the NBC family." Ann Curry, who is so freaking earnest and annoying it is painful, will take Meredith's spot, and Natalie Morales will read the news, taking Ann's job. All That Is Bitter & Sweet, Ashley Judd's memoir, is based on journals she wrote as well as childhood memories. This morning on the Today show, Judd was quite articulate as she spoke about her dysfunctional family and being given "the gift" of her own recovery. "I didn't know what was quote-unquote wrong with me," she admitted. "I looked really good on the outside… I had a lot of anxiety and insomnia. I realized eventually that I was really powerless over my childhood." Judd revealed that she was is a survivor of sexual abuse — incest — but insisted: "I am not alone or unusual…Every 2 seconds, a woman is sexually aggressed upon in this country."
