Is it weird that I read this on the register and immediately thought "There are some people on Jezebel in long distance relationships who would probably be interested in a kiss transmitting bunny." [www.theregister.co.uk] #groupthink #tips(Edit comment)
Lena Dunham, writer/director/star of "Tiny Furniture" and writer/co-exec producer of HBO's new series "Girls" is having her film "Tiny Furniture" honored by the Criterion Collection!
This is a HUGE deal since the Criterion Collection has over 500 films in it's series, and yet only about 2.3% of those films have been directed by women.
OH MY GOD. This whole thing is so fucking problematic. Disregarding the HR nightmare of speculating on an employee's mental health condition on a public forum, UGH. This is everything wrong with "ladyblogs" in one post. And that the assistant needs to crowdsource help for her boss, AND basically mother her, is so horribly fucked up.
They've had a few good post that address things that don't show up on Jez a lot (which isn't the site's 'fault' or anything). But they're also had some epic fails. #Groupthink(Edit comment)
It's an analysis of Jezebel, the Hairpin and xoJane. Pretty on the mark too. It really got me thinking about the use of the word 'lady' and helped me understand why it annoys the fuck out of me. #Groupthink
Ugh, fucking nasty. What a fucking douchebag. I hate that the community gives chances to shitheads like this and funds their projects while deserving women with interesting thigns to say aren't credible.
As one of the commenters over there puts it, "Looking at the first couple of pictures, my thought was, 'Yuck.' But by the third or fourth image, they just seemed tiresome. Kind of like being confronted by a kid who thinks he's clever because he can flip his eyelid inside out." #Groupthink
Hey Jezzies, apologies if this has been discussed already, but I have a question about the Komen fiasco. A conservative friend of mine said basically, "I don't know why people are so mad at Komen. Planned Parenthood doesn't even perform mammograms!! They just do manual breast exams, which I can do all by myself!" I googled "does Planned Parenthood do mammograms"? And it looks like it's kind of a conservative talking point that Planned Parenthood is lying to you and doesn't even do mammograms, they're just lying so they can take Komen's money to do evil, evil abortions. Apparently they refer women to other providers to get mammograms? But they pay for that, right? Does anyone know how this works?
I'd love to see an article on Jez about all the conservative talking points/lies about PP, methodically shooting down each one. [www.plannedparenthood.org]
There are several PP facilities that have the capacity to perform mammograms (machines are apparently expensive) and are the only mammogram providers in some areas.
I was schooled yesterday- health grants can only be used for their intended purpose. So no Komen funded abortions. #Groupthink
Technically they're right. Many Planned Parenthood locations don't perform mammograms.
But the whole "primary versus secondary service" thing is complete bullshit. It's no different than going to your regular physician for a rash and having them refer you to a dermatologist. Essentially Planned Parenthood offers as full a range of services as possible, but since they can't cover everything, they sometimes refer people to specialists. If Komen's position now is that they only want to fund "primary service" providers, they'd better be prepared to pull funding to any place which does patient referrals to specialists. Which is basically EVERY responsible medical facility.
I agree 100% that a full rundown of all the lies and nuttiness surrounding the Komen fiasco would be very helpful. #Groupthink
I had this come up on my Facebook when a man was saying that the Komen fiasco is a media lie made up...I'm going to paste here what I said to him, but please read it in a less ragey way :) The gist is that Planned Parenthood does the first line in defense which is a physical breast exam and then they refer. They never claimed to do mammograms, they claimed to do "Breast health screenings" which is absolutely true. Hope this helps. The mammogram thing is a conservative talking point designed to appeal to people who probably haven't been to PP and/or don't know much about how breast cancer is usually found (there are several steps, the first of which isn't always a mammogram.)
"Anyone who's ever had a FEMALE physical knows that one of the first things they do is a breast exam, performed by the doctor--be this at a Planned Parenthood clinic, y...our family doctor, or an OBGYN specialist. THEN if something feels worrisome, they refer you to a breast/cancer center where they actually house the mammography and ultra sound machines.
If you are under 40, you do NOT receive regular mammograms, but you very well might still get breast cancer so these physical exams are often the first line in early detection. Especially for the young, poor clientele of PP. Furthermore, if you are younger and a lump is found (LIKE WHAT PERSONALLY HAPPENED TO ME) they send you to an ultra sound technician, not a mammographer."
Rick Santorum said today that abortions cause cancer.
I think we should respond to the phony health claims of right-wingers with our own phony health claims.
Did you know that worrying about decisions that other people make about their uteruses causes cancer?!
Did you know that saying that gay people caused AIDS causes AIDS?!
Did you know that not getting vaccines because you think it will turn your child into a sexually-active harlot with mental retardation causes actual illnesses like cervical cancer, whooping cough and polio not only in your child, but in immune-compromised individuals such as cancer patients?! Oh wait, that's actually true.
Did you know that saying that you don't care about poor people causes blood-sucking leeches to crawl up your urethra and eat your internal organs?!
horrible, horrible story here in Washington: [xfinity.comcast.net] I'm sure you've covered the beginning: mom goes missing in Utah. dad claims he decided at 11pm to take his toddler-age boys camping, in Utah, in December he moves back w/ his dad in Puyallup. grandfather was arrested last year for voyeurism, including pictures of his now-missing daughter in law in stages of undress/using the facilities (bonus creepy: grandfather claims he got sexual w/ the missing woman 'because that's what she was like'. her family claims she found her father in law completely creepy) dad loses custody of his kids yesterday the kids came for a supervised visit, he let them in the house and locked the social worker out and then blew the house up. landlord claims there wasn't gas service in that house so he must have put accelerant everywhere just before the boys arrived.
I'm going to go pull the covers over my head now. how can such evil exist? #tips
Was just coming to post about this. For those who can't watch the trailer at work, here's a nice print interview with the author whose book sparked the documentary:
HOLY MACKEREL!!!! [www.cnn.com] Josh Powell and his two young sons -- whose wife and mother, respectively, went missing more than two years ago -- were killed early Sunday afternoon in an explosion at their home in Washington state, a sheriff's spokesman said. #tips(Edit comment)
Agreed. If they ever want these donors back, she has to go. I think the only question now is, will she gracefully step down, or will they have to push her out? #tips(Edit comment)
Thanks for this article. I'm glad the press is showing the story behind this BS, but found the "Komen was no match for the Planned Parenthood PR machine" focus VERY insulting. It wasn't that innocent Komen was outmanuevered by wily Planned Parenthood, but that SGK Foundation was looking for a way to get the vocal right off it's back about PP, hired Handel to do that, all the while not realizing that there was a silent majority of people who actually care about the services PP provides. (Edit comment)
Though, as someone who works in non-profit marketing, I did find Komen's response laughable and PP's quite impressive. And really, I think it says a lot about the organizations themselves. Komen doesn't expect anyone to stand up to them, so they don't even bother putting together a coherent counter-message. Planned Parenthood gives their supporters so much, that they have undying loyalty in return.
But, like I said, I work in the online marketing side of these things, so I could be reading too much into it. #tips
You are right that PP's response was impressive and I don't want to take away anything from them. It's just that this particular article seemed intent on making SGK the innocent victim: "Death threats!" "PP's scarily effective PR!" #tips(Edit comment)
Yeah, the tone of that article was very odd. "they're no match for Planned Parenthood," "They were just naive in the face of [the] incredibly sophisticated Planned Parenthood operation." Seriously?
Dude, Planned Parenthood did nothing much other than issue a few statements of regret. It was the outrage of the public that drove this, not Planned Parenthood PR. Recognize that, and you might have some hope of existing five years from now. #Groupthink
