This Year's Pirelli Calendar Includes a Plus-Size Model!

The lineup for this year’s fancy-pants Pirelli calendar has been revealed. And for the first time, a plus-size model made the cut.

The Pirelli calendar is a very strange high-fashion ritual. It’s put together by the crème de la crème—the 2015 edition was shot by Steven Meisel and styled by Carine Roitfeld, for instance. But you can’t purchase it. It’s produced as a corporate freebie by a tire company. Basically it’s the giveaway calendar from your local propane dealership, for the 1%.

But it’s quite the annual haute occasion! WWD reports that this year, the theme is FETISH. (E.L. James appears in a burst of smoke; “Did somebody say FETISH?”) “I loved the character I had to play. I used to box and it was related to boxing, but they didn’t have me box. It was character-driven — like a boxer mixed with a dominatrix,” explained model Joan Smalls. They stuck Gigi Hadid in latex.

Particularly exciting is the inclusion of Candice Huffine, a plus-size model. (In a bustier!) You might recognize her from Lane Bryant’s Isabel Toledo runway show (via HuffPo). “My presence on this set – the most glamorous in the world – is a sign that things are really changing,” she told Vogue UK.
