The latest in the ongoing and progressively more depressing series of crises in Detroit has left thousands of seriously impoverished residents without water. How can PETA fix this? said nobody. And, as if it could hear itself not being summoned, PETA showed up to act like assholes.
The animal activist group has offered residents of Detroit who are too poor to pay their water bills a solution: the organization will pay to get their showers running again — if they agree to go vegan for a month.
Here's an incredibly tone deaf statement from them:
Vegan meals take far less of a toll on the Earth's resources. It takes about 2,500 gallons of water to produce just a pound of meat but only about 155 gallons of water to produce a pound of wheat. [...] Vegan meals are also a cost-effective way to help prevent health problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart conditions, the last thing that someone who is struggling financially needs to deal with.
Oh my god. Fuck off, PETA.
