Last night, MTV aired the final two episodes of The Paper, and we're totally sad about it. There's still a whole semester left! Why they gotta leave us hanging like that? Anyway, it was great to see Amanda finally assert some control over her staff, specifically over managing editor Alex, who, in the final minutes of the episode, still wasn't over the fact that he was not chosen as "In Chief" and was still acting like a giant baby. Amanda, if you're out there, I just want you to know that I went to NYU, too (and I applied early, just like you!). Everything gets so much better. You'll find your niche and you'll meet people who appreciate your eccentricities and quirks, and who won't judge you based on the person you used to be when you were 14. One day, when you're walking from Bobst over to Main Building, it'll hit you all of a sudden, like, "Whoa, I live here! I'm gonna make it after all." And then you'll throw your hat up in the air and twirl around. (JK.) More »

Last night on The Paper, the kids got ready for Homecoming. Adam (whose dance and shirt in this clip is amazing) triumphed over the football jock by winning Homecoming King. And Amanda was asked to the dance by a kid from the Latin Club, only to be let down after he got grounded and was forced to back out. Seriously, what the hell did the Latin Club kid do to get grounded? Do kids in high school still get "grounded"? Anyway, props to Amanda for being the trouper she is and going to the dance anyway. My favorite underdog on The Paper, EIC Amanda, has finally started to assert her authority in the kindest way possible but is still being mocked and disrespected by her fellow editors (particularly Trevor, the biggest blowhard I've ever had an inappropriate crush on). Adam, the flamboyant High School Musical fan, is reveling in the drama. In fact, he was voted "Most Dramatic" for the school's yearbook superlatives, a title he wasn't happy with, but clearly deserved. Clip above. More »

The kids on The Paper went on deadline for the first issue of the school year and under the new regime of Amanda as "In Chief." It seemed to be a mess. Amanda got too caught up writing her own editorial (which she edited while on the can) to actually run the operation, nobody knew how to make a PDF file, and they had to slash four pages of the issue at the last minute. Meanwhile, Adam, the hot ad sales manager, peaced so that he could go see High School Musical on ice. Clip above. More »

("It's raw but it doesn't show bruises. It's harsh but it's not cruel. I can't think of a better medium to portray the all-too-real-but-still-not-quite-real world of high school than that of pseudo-reality television.") We're still totally in love with MTV's reality show The Paper, and its portrayal of teens as something other than the scary, greedy, illiterate assholes we've become used to seeing on television. On last night's episode, managing editor Alex and another Circuit staff member decided to do a "serious" investigative journalism piece on what life is like for a high school football player by temporarily joining the team for a day; to do so, they were required to get physicals. Interestingly, the idea of having to do the ball-cough test in front of one another seemed way more frightening to the two than having to face 250-lb. linebackers. Clip above. More »

We cannot stress this enough: The Paper is the best original programming MTV has had in years. The kids are great, the drama is real (unlike some other "reality" shows on the network), and it's really fun to watch kids get so passionate about something other than the color of Lexus they're getting for their sixteenth birthday. On last night's episode, Amanda, the newly appointed editor-in-chief, returned from summer break with not only a new title at the paper, but a new nose and wardrobe. It's kind of mean how the rest of the staff talks about her behind her back, but plastic surgery aside, the girl seems like she's really comfortable being exactly who she is. Clip above. More »

Last night, MTV premiered its new reality series The Paper, and it's sofa king good! In the brief 30 minutes we got to spend with the kids on staff at Florida high school newspaper The Circuit, it was really cute to see how enthusiastic they all are (just wait till they realize that print journalism is a dying field), but hands down, the most compelling character thus far is Amanda, the Tracey Flick/Andrea Zuckerman, who sets out to become Editor-in-Chief, and manages to earn the title, much to the chagrin of the rest of the staff. She's really awesome to watch—her confidence is astounding—but you just know if she were the EIC of the school paper when you were in high school, you would've probably really disliked her.
