The CW’s excellent Monday night, 2-hour comedy block is looking good for the near future: Both Jane the Virgin and Crazy Ex Girlfriend have been renewed for upcoming seasons!
Despite showrunner and star Rachel Bloom scooping a Golden Globe for Best TV Comedy Actress and the show’s warm reception from critics, a second season for Crazy Ex Girlfriend—until now—seemed very uncertain. While the musical comedy was peppered with clever, edgy dialogue and catchy songs, it consistently failed to draw over 1 million viewers per episode.
Perhaps, as Vulture’s E. Alex Jung writes, “most networks [including the CW] have realized they can’t keep churning shows on and off their on their schedules: Audiences need time to discover shows.”
A network’s patience tends to reward both audiences and themselves, as most of these shows—especially Crazy Ex Girlfriend and Jane the Virgin—develop deep cult followings.
Jane the Virgin, starring the ever-endearing Gina Rodriguez, will now be entering its third season where hopefully, it will finally—FINALLY—drop the Jane and Michael romance and give Jane’s smoking hot college advisor (Adam Rodriguez) the full attention that he deserves.
