The news from LA's Miramonte Elementary School keeps getting worse: in addition to Mark Berndt (accused of feeding kids his semen, among other stomach-turning crimes) and Martin Springer (accused of fondling seven-year-old girls), a third teacher is now implicated. The unnamed woman allegedly helped Berndt by sending female students to his classroom to "get cookies" (which were in at least one case apparently coated with his semen). A lawyer for the alleged victims describes this teacher's role: "The way Berndt pulled this off is he'd come into her class in the middle of the day, he'd go up to her and whisper in her ear. Then she would go pull out two little girls, and she'd walk the little girls right through the common door into Mr. Berndt's dungeon." More »

In the past year people have proven that they have a truly undeniable urge to say and do stupid things on Facebook, and that includes plenty of teachers. From the elementary school teacher who made fun of a student's hairstyle on the site to a nursery school teacher fired for tricking her ex into thinking they had a daughter, educators have been disciplined, let go, or even arrested for things they posted online, even when they had little to do with their students. Now school across the country are trying to combat the problem by issuing new guidelines that ban teachers from private communications with kids via social networking sites. The intention is to protect both teachers and students, but the new rules may be punishing those who use the technology effectively rather than just a handful of idiots and sleazeballs who shouldn't be in a classroom anyway. Three teachers in China were denied the right to work by local authorities because of provincial rules stating "civil servants should not be carriers of an infectious disease." But now they're petitioning China's State Council to let them teach, saying a national law protecting employment rights for HIV-positive people should apply in their case. HIV activist Yu Fangqiang says, "The State Council has the responsibility to check if there is any contradiction between departmental regulations and the law of the state: if there is, the regulations of the departments should be removed." Eileen Bernstein, a teacher in Haverstraw, N.Y., has apologized after binding the hands and feet of two African-American girls in her classroom in an attempt to "enliven a seventh-grade discussion of slavery." Bernstein, who is white, reportedly bound the two girls and had them crawl under desks in order to simulate the slave ship experience for the rest of her students. Gabrielle Shand, one of the bound students, was extremely upset by the experience (and rightfully so) and "burst into tears at home." Her mother, Christine Shand, told the New York Times: ''It doesn't matter the color of the kids, it's just not right to tie them up. My daughter is still upset, still embarrassed. She didn't go to school today.'' William Aldridge, director of a local chapter of the NAACP, agrees, noting that Bernstein only apologized "'because Gabrielle was upset, not because she admitted she did something wrong.''
