It seems pretty obvious that unless you're part of a certain subculture that shall remain nameless, you'll be less likley to lay out in the sun or use a tanning bed after you've applied sunless tanning lotion. Of course, researchers needed to conduct a survey to confirm this, and while the results aren't earth shattering the discussion around it is pretty interesting. Apparently some doctors are hesitant to promote self-tanner as a method of reducing skin cancer, not because it's dangerous but because they feel that ideally women shouldn't want to change their skin color. Remember last week, in the season four finale when Pauly D detailed his plans for when he got back to the states? His exact, excited words went like so: "I can't wait to go tanning, I'm gonna go tanning, then I'm gonna go tanning, then I'm gonna go tanning, then I'm gonna go to the gym, then I'm gonna do laundry." He wasn't exaggerating. MTV has released this clip from the upcoming season five of a red-faced Pauly D who had tanned so many times in a row (supposedly to make up for the months of not tanning in Italy) that he "burned his face off." Then he tried to fix the problem by peeling off his burned skin and exfoliating, which is exactly what you should do if you want to make it worse. Even Snooki had to admit, "I never thought in my wildest dreams that I would ever tell anyone in this house to stop tanning," but in this case, she had to. All she wanted to do was create generic pop musical about a magical land where ladies sport Daisy Dukes and shoot whipped cream out of their boobs, but now she's getting flak for promoting a soon-to-be illegal practice. Fresh on the heels of a possible skin implant that would allow us to get bronzed without actually going in the sun, scientists from King's College London are working on a pill that would replace sunscreen, and they say it could be available within five years. Coral produces natural sunscreen that prevents sun damage even though it grows in shallow water. Researchers hope to replicate this with a pill that would protect skin and eyes from UV rays and eliminate the need to slather yourself with a shot glass-sized portion of goo. More »

They've developed an implant the size of a grain of rice that stimulates melanin production when placed under the skin.
