While most of us would probably give a lot for a few extra inches of chic, life is hard for those ladies over 6 feet. At the Tall Persons Club, women commiserate over the daily challenges of life for a tall women and the larger issues of finding partners - along with the callous social perception that to date a taller woman is somehow emasculating. Says one anthropologist, rather gloomily, tall men “are generally more successful in life, in areas including salary and winning presidential elections. But this doesn't happen for women. The chances of marriage and children are higher for taller men, but the reverse is true for women.” Not that all the women featured take such a defeatist view: says Arianne Cohen, author of The Tall Book, “Tall is gorgeous...and the moment you perceive yourself that way, other people perceive it too.” [Times of London] More »

That's University of Wisconsin senior Rebecca Thomas, from her essay 'Life As A Tall Girl', excerpted in today's NY Times. We (well, me, Anna) can relate: I'm five-foot-eleven. (Related: Is it just me or do tall women travel in packs?) "The retail industry doesn't exactly cater to a woman with a 37-inch inseam and size 14 feet," continues Thomas. "I never dated, let alone kissed a guy until I was in college...Being a tall woman was hard for me growing up. But in the end, I think it has made me a stronger individual. I've grown into my body, and I try my best to wear all 76 inches of my height with pride, and take the awkward comments and stares with poise. In fact, sometimes I wear heels.
