Wow! so many people are looking at my sleeping nannas. I have opened the comments up to anonymous browsers so please leave some thoughts if you care to. also. i'm not sure if it's supposed to be creepy or cute, rather, just a passing fact. nanna naps are a part of life. large and small. open or closed mouth. fake babies or real babies.
I love it! Really, when do we get to see old women at all? Golden Girls was a long time ago... I love how peaceful they look. Maybe it's because I think grandma = woman who worked hard all her life, full of funny stories and bitterness and hard work. But it's nice to see them relax if only for a moment.
@HeatherNumber1: My definition of grandma, or Baba in my case, is the same. It was my honor to present the eulogy for my Baba and I related a ton of information about her life that no one had considered or even knew. I miss her stories, still. We have a picture somewhere of Baba asleep in great room while the hub-bub of Christmas dinner clean up is going on around her. I treasure it.
I am weirded out by pictures of ANYONE sleeping. I feel like sleeping should be kind of a private thing. Your hair is everywhere, your clothes are rumpled, your mouth might be hanging open or your face might be slack or covered in that dim icky sheen you get from sweating under the covers. Gah. No.
Eeegh. No. Regardless of age, from infants to grandmas, pictures of sleeping people are just a little too personal and intrusive for me.
Also I have been told I look really weird when I sleep, so this might be my own insecurities talking.
Pictures of sleeping people aren't that exciting, unless they're babies or drunk. I say that as someone who has been photographed way too many times while slumbering. I can't help I fall asleep in vehicles easily when I'm not the driver.
Apparently my creepy radar is waaaayy off, which is kind of bothering me. This is not the first time something like this comes along where I think "haha!" or "cute!" and everyone else is like "damn that's some scary shit".
I find it more rude than anything else. If my kids or grandkids took a photo like this and published it, they would be out of the will in a heartbeat. My own mother would probably find it hysterical, and just plot revenge of some sort on whoever did it.
@WickedWitchoftheWest loves dough.: So I guess you wouldn't appreciate what we used to do to my great grandma when we... a-hem... decorated her? We'd put bows and mardi gras beads and stuff on her, then make sure she had empty bottles of wine at her feet and a full one in her arm... then we'd take a picture. My favorite was when we managed to get those fake life-sized doves you put on Christmas trees in her hair.
@LaComtesse: I hate having my photo taken in any circumstances, so anything like that would disturb me. I've been telling people for years that I'm a vampire and won't show up in the shot anyway.
@WickedWitchoftheWest loves dough.: My Grandma Grace was so cute about it. She fell asleep ALL the time, and whenever she woke up to all those people staring at her smiling she would cover her face and go "Oooooooooooh!" then giggle and call us stinkers.
*sigh*
Thanks for that: I kinda wanted to think about her today. She was my favorite. :-)
@LaComtesse: That is AMAZING! And she sounds hilarious. You have to find one, scan it, and send it to that blog. Or start one called Decorated Grannies or something.
@HeatherNumber1: Thanks. I think my mom has one; next time I go to CT I'll have to look for it. That would be a great blog, though, frankly, I could devote a whole blog to Gracie. She was so hilarious and there are a million great stories and pictures.
creepy of anyone sleeping like this, at any age (with their head thrown back, mouth open) because they could also be people with mental or physical handicaps that causes this, and so it seems oddly exploitative.
Actually, I've now clicked through to it and I actually think it is pretty disrespectful. These are grown people, just because they are old doesn't mean they are like babies or something.
I don't know, I'm not enraged or anything - but I find it pretty condescending and it makes me uncomfortable.
I worked on the nursing staff at a long term care facility through most of high school and college, and I had the following thoughts when looking at this picture:
- I hope that someone helped her remove her dentures.
- Someone help her lay down; that is bad for her neck
- And I hope, hope, hope that she has recently gone to the bathroom.
My dad sleeps on the couch with his mouth wide open like that. Over the summer, we thought it would be funny to take pictures of him in the act, so to speak. When we looked at the pictures it was super uncomfortable- he looked so... deceased... that the joke lost all of its humor.
@LindsayC: doctoral hilarity ensues: That's about how my dad looked when I visited him in the ICU after quadruple bypass surgery. It's not fun to think of your dad's mortality! And therefore, not fun to think of dead grannies either :( I vote creepy!
@Emmie of Doom: Yep- no one (well, most people, I suppose) likes to think of their parents' mortality. As my parents age I'm finding myself thinking things like, "I probably only have 20 years left my mom, and 15 with my dad if he is anything like his folks" and I guess I don't like to be reminded of it. I don't know- I didn't look at the site, maybe it's cute.
@LindsayC: doctoral hilarity ensues: My dad sometimes sleeps with his arms crossed over his chest. My brother used to think I was posing him like that! Listen, I'm creepy, but I'm not "make your dad look like he's in a casket" creepy.
@LindsayC: doctoral hilarity ensues: There was a PostSecret about that back in the day, where the writer said s/he had a photo of his/her mother in which said mother was sleeping and looked dead. They laughed at it as children, but when she did die, it wasn't funny anymore.

There don't seem to be any old men with babies groping at their balls. There aren't any old men at all. That's all.
