"Miron puts California's costs of enforcing the marijuana ban - policing, the courts, jail time - at $981 million a year."
Helpful solution towards decriminalizing your citizens and wasting less money. As a resident of CA I'd like marijuana to be legal, though I know the federal government will scream until they are hoarse about it.
If you're a california resident, you can visit this site to petition the governor and the state representatives to reinstate funding for women's shelters
I wonder what "promises" the "Promise Keepers" were keeping in keeping women out of their services? The promise to set up suspiciously gay-sounding "boys only" rules and then denounce gays? The promise to serve as an anti advertisement for Christianity? The promise to piss me off?
@Elaken: Any Vermont farm boy could have told you that. Cows are generally docile, but getting them riled up is pretty easy if you don't know what you're doing.
@Penny: Thanks. It looks brutal. It's hard to judge without knowing what they decided NOT to cut though. Are tax increases not possible for some reason???
@Penny: Jesus Christ. My heart is in my gut. I can't believe how low humanity is willing to go. It makes me fear for the rest of the nation if this is the best we can do. California is just the tip of the iceberg. Much much poorer countries than the US would never allow such low levels of spending on basic social needs.
I don't really know what to say about Schwarzenegger. I'm disgusted with our state politicians in general right now. As JD said, prisons are a major cost and I think that's one of the first places they should start. But, instead, they're cutting into schools and social programs (of course, what else?) while coming up with BRILLIANT plans like selling random patches of state property.
@Penny: I had thought of it as a scare tactic. More headlines might open more tax payer's hearts to the idea of an increase. As a Cali resident, I don't know how we're going to get through this but I was happy to see them look into cuts but this wasn't what I had in mind. We have a very bloated gov't in Sacramento that we're supporting.
@sarahfgirl: That's part of the problem though. Majority of tax-payers want to see a plan that cuts program funding as well as increases taxes. The Republicans in the legislature have voted against any budget proposal that includes tax increases and we need a 2/3 majority to pass a budget. Can you say "fucked"?
@J.D.Regent: Well, we need a 2/3 majority of legislators to pass a budget. The voting public does not get a say in the budget. But yes, 50% majority of voters to pass an amendment, 2/3 majority of legislators to pass a budget. I hate CA politics.
Let's hope these currently almost-equally paid young women carry on negotiating well and choosing workplaces where their efforts are rewarded throughout their working lives*. How about some vintage Megan on this subject? http://jezebel.com/5020289/woman-to-woman-how-to-get-the-money-you-...
did you just say all. state. funding? holy shit. and here i thought an earthquake would be the end of california. my suggestion for cost savings for california are to get rid of three strikes you're out and retroactively apply it + do early parole for non-violent offenders and close some prisons.
@Lymed: "Assumes $1.2 billion cut, but does not specify how the savings would be achieved. Democrats and Schwarzenegger are seeking changes to release thousands of prisoners to home detention and county jails."
@J.D.Regent: I'm replying to your misplaced response asking about tax increases. Thanks to ballot initiatives, the California constitution requires a 2/3 majority to pass the budget and to pass any tax increases. Basically, no Republican will vote for a tax increase. The state is a mess because a small minority can hold up the budget.
@Lymed: Furthermore, the state is a mess because too many important issues are resolved via referendum. I live in Florida, so I know what I am talking about.
@Lymed: What would it take to overturn that constitutional provision? Is there a campaign for this? Direct democracy leads to some seriously scary shit. Mob rule people!!! The checks and balances are there for a reason!
@J.D.Regent: They've tried to overturn it, with no avail. There are always people in really bad budget fights who think they can get it passed, but everybody forgets about the budget fight when the next election comes around.
@Lymed: Has any gubernatorial candidate ever run on a platform of changing the budget process and reforming the referendum system? On like a Constitutional Party platform? Do you think someone like that could win?

Cats are evil geniuses huh? That explains why every evil mastermind in cartoons is pictured stroking a cat like Claw in inspector Gadget.
