I am toally late here but:

No one can be "forced" into recovery.
No one can recover without a total change in their life style, coping habits, general habits or social circle.
No one goes to treatment and "is cured" or gets better.

Sobriety and recovery are life long battles.

I think Wonderland should be ashamed of themselves. What they tout is basically like those "I lost 100 lbs and didn't exercise and I ate chocolate and pizza 3 times a day!"

If it sounds to good to be true, it is.

Also, and I swear I will stop bringing up Marian Keyes on this thread, but in her latest book (This Charming Man) it is so clear how easy it could be for others to shut someone away in rehab if a place weren't reputable, before the person is ready to admit they have a problem.

It's what we hear so often that it's become a joke: The first step is copping to an addiction. So if some lame rehab were willing to take any celebrity, not just Linds, and say, "Well, she's not saying she has a problem, but hey, we'll take her money anyway" then they are just as complicit in the problem.

I am not sure Lindsay ever realized and admitted there was a problem, is what I am saying. And while she may be clean now, I think it may be due more to Samantha Ronson than to Wonderfuck or whatever that place is called.

Rehab is about the seeds of recovery being planted. It is supposed to lay a foundation for that person to foster. It's for people that are fighting themselves every day to stay alive.

This guy's not doing any of us in recovery (or those who are thinking of recovery) who take it seriously any favors by publicizing/trivializing his clientele.

@Devonna: Exactly- rehab isn't the end, it's merely the means, the beginning, the way to sobriety. For the most part, the biggest difficulty lies not in getting clean, but staying clean. Just ask smokers-- lots of folks quit, but they start up again, either due to desire, stress, or habit.

A certain amount of people are going to be recidivist, that's just the way it is. But for the folks who stay strong, and learn to deal with their addiction, the need for support is vital. And your support network shouldn't be broadcasting your troubles, especially in light of someone who may backslide.

I know if I fail and start using and drinking again, that my self-doubt and fatalistic inner voice will kick in, as they are aspects of my addiction. If my efforts and failures were splashed across the internet and tv, it would only push me further into the dissociative alienation that feeds my problem.

This guy is an opportunist. I wish Lindsay much strength and love in her recovery.

I've been sober for 6 years and didn't go to rehab, just started going to 12-step meetings. Because I wanted it.
I agree with most of the posts on here that it depends on the individual to get sober.
My only exception is pple think that rehab doesn't work. I know a lot of pple (not talking about celebs here) who were forced to go to rehab and found sobriety there. And for many, it's necessary to be medically supervised while de-toxing. The REASON pple think that rehab doesn't work is because of men like this dude who don't honor anonymity, as well as artists, celebs who don't honor that. There are reasons the founders of 12 step program made it essential that recovery is private. If you go around blabbing about it, and you initially fail...that's just going to cause yet one more addict to think it's bunk.

I know someone who went to hundreds of rehabs. Finally, at some point it clicked for him, and he stopped.

I seem to remember pictures of Lindsay being taken, out in the world, while she was in rehab. That's just bullshit. Someone serious about recovery would be in a place where there were no paps, and no one knew about it.

Rehab doesn't always work. I went to rehab at 24. I got clean/sober at 34, without rehab. I knew - knew without a doubt, on the day I stopped at 34, that I was going to die if I kept going. That was enough for me to change my behavior. I hope that Lindsay will have that awakening moment, but it's going to require almost an entire life change for her.

I don't really like alcohol so I don't typically drink. And the pressure I get from others to drink when I'm out and about is enormous. First, it's the incredulity: You don't DRINK?!?!. Then it's the goading: Awww.... just have ONE drink... for me!. Next come the questions: How can you have fun if you don't drink? Then comes the guilt: *I* can't have fun if *you* don't drink, too! I feel bad if I'm the only one drinking! Last is the shunning: Well, if you won't drink then you must be really boring. I swear, most people turn into a bad after-school special.

So I can only imagine someone like LiLo, fresh out of cold-turkey rehab, easily slipping back into old habits, because people you are around want you do do the same things they do, and I doubt most of her friends have stopped abusing drugs/alcohol along with her, because she's obviously the only one with a "problem(wink, wink), ya know?

@ceejeemcbeegee: I go through the same thing every.single.time I go out with friends to a bar. It's so aggravating and annoying. I actually do have issues with alcohol, so it stings a little when they act like knocking back a few is no big deal.

It just doesn't work like that for me.

@ceejeemcbeegee: I feel you guys, I'm still in university so it's extra shocking to people when I tell them I probably drink a few times a year, just when I actually feel like it. People are SO judgey about it. I tend to hang out with regular pot smokers too though, while they don't get so incredulous about me not smoking pot regularly I still get weird looks for hanging out with a group of people smoking pot. I enjoy my life sober, what's the big deal in that?

@IamKateness: I was exactly like you when I was in college. I learned (after several totally shitty experiences) that I wasn't "good" at drinking, so I basically stopped by junior year. And I hung out/dated people who smoked pot, but I never smoked myself. My fiancé to this day still doesn't believe that I used to hang out with those people but didn't smoke myself! Oh well.

@ceejeemcbeegee: I am constantly amazed that even after witness my SO at some of the lowest points in his alcoholism, his old college roommate still pulls that crap with him. "Oh just have one drink and then stop." "I can't stop! You know that! You saw me go into rehab!" "C'mon, one drink!"

@katevsmothra: Brings me back to The West Wing, Season One, where Leo is talking about his alcoholism. "It's not that I want one drink... I want ten drinks." The power that alcohol holds is overwhelming. I had problems with it in college, and even though I've trained myself to be a social drinker (it can be done, but it takes dedication and effort), there's always the fear that one drink will lead to two, will lead to four, and pretty soon I'll be lying on a floor somewhere.

Seriously--a huge part of recovery programs (according to my MIL, who works in a treatment center) is teaching people about not getting immediate gratification, which is part of what drug addiction is: escape on demand, feeling better right away instead of dealing with life. Granted, yes, if a person isn't willing to change they're not going to succeed, but I think the treatment center owes it to their patients to help them in any way they can instead of giving them a place to escape cameras for a month.

@rollergirl76: I saw the Val Kilmer movie of the same name that was about the murders. I had no idea what I was getting into. I didn't know anything about the film, and basically just thought I was watching a nice Val Kilmer movie on a Sunday afternoon. Boy was I wrong. The whole thing was traumatizing.

This guy is scum. Relapse is quite common. And I have no idea what Lindsay is doing or not doing. That said, people who've attended rehab are far more likely to stick with their recovery if they are involved in a 12-step program. And relationships in the first year and surrounding yourself with temptation are not advised. So if she's clean and sober -- she's doing it against the odds. And if not, it's not that surprising.

@Meg: Something tells me LiLo didn't make her 90 meetings in 90 days. I do hope she truly is clean, but a lot of people have to go to rehab more than once. It takes a while to learn that even when you leave the treatment center, you are not "cured."

Because she has no support system outside of her relationship with Samantha Ronson, which by the way, breaks one of the cardinal rules of recovery: no new romantic relationships until at least 1 year after your discharge date.

@NefariousNewt: I have no idea what her difficulties are or if she's even doing drugs. But you are not supposed to continue the same routines, hang out at the same places, and surround yourself with the same people you were with, while you were doing drugs. And if Sam wasn't involved anymore than just being a concerned girlfriend -- not using, too, not supplying -- fine. But she should be talking in her own meetings and I still wouldn't advise hanging at night clubs. Especially when someone's already had a relapse. But, again, this is pure speculation as Lindsay could be cleaner as a whistle.

@it takes a lot to laugh: If you are getting fired because of your drug and alcohol problems then it is generally classified as an addiction. Those for whom it is just an activity don't let it interfere with their non-social activities.

@kelsium: that's not really true though...I mean how many kids skip class because they're too hung over or whatever from a night of partying? how many kids wind up on academic probation? The reality is though that Lindsay had a job that was more demanding in terms of time and professionalism than college or flipping burgers or whatever jobs young people her age have, that was then fueled by a certain fame based meglomania that she was untouchable; i.e. her actions wouldn't have consequences. Your average college student shapes up because they get negative feedback really quickly (i.e. bad grades or whatever). I'm not saying Lindsay isn't an addict or is an addict, but simply saying because it interfered with her nonsocial life makes her an addict doesn't take the whole picture into consideration. And I say this as someone who is temporarily living with someone who is a functional alcoholic and does not let his driving interfere with his working life. it doesn't mean he isn't an addict.

@LibidinousSlut: If a person is expelled because he or she skips class too many times, then it is a problem. Essentially that's what happened to Lindsey's career. I just cannot understand writing off clearly self-destructive behavior with a "kids will be kids" kind of response. It is insulting. I say this as someone with a long history of family problems with alcohol, most of which started at some point when they were young. Even if it isn't "alcoholism" it is clearly a problem.
