When I was a teen I knew more teachers who identified as feminists (including men) than students. Would have loved to read – or start – a site like this.

I love that there's this outlet for young feminists. As someone who STILL struggles with identifying herself that way (because of the loaded cultural baggage...same problem I have with the word "Christian"), I'm really glad this is there for high school-age girls, who are definitely in the process of beginning to define themselves.

@bluebears: ditto on what maggiesox said. people take different things from sororities - it's not always about dates with frat boys. as someone who was an extremely liberal art major AND a sorority girl in ultra-traditional Alabama, this dichotomy is something I am very familiar with :)

The first time I told one of my classmates that I was a feminist (I think I was 14 or 15), my classmate looked confused and then asked, "So, you're going to date chicks now?"

@morninggloria: I had one of those bumper stickers that says "Feminism is the Radical Notion that Women are People" when I was 16, and I had people give me a hard time for it. One guy told me "Feminism is the radical notion that women are men" and one person just keyed my car with a swastika and a crudely drawn "Fuck you!"

Really great high school environment, that one.

I'm so happy to see young women identifying with feminism, especially since so much of the popular culture teaches people feminism is bad (I'm looking at you Lady Gaga and Nelly Furtado). I wish I had a better grasp on feminism when I was a teenager-- I would have spent a lot less time worrying about being pretty enough and whether enough people liked me.

Damn, now I wish this had been around during my Lilith Fair-Tori Amos on loop-male-bashing teen years. I mean I haven't changed that much since then but I imagine, that at nearly 26, I'm not their target audience.

I love her piece on dating feminists. It's hard for me to deal with men who don't have some interest in women's issues. My dad's a feminist, called me spoiled on that.

Wow I wish something like this had been around for me at that age. I think it would have given me a lot more confidence in myself and my convictions. I'm so happy to see something for teens that will hopefully put them on the fast track to critical thinking and an understanding of what feminism means and its place in society.

I remember after finishing The Feminine Mystique (I got it for Christmas one year), I decided that I wanted to read feminist literature, but I had no idea what to read and I felt embarrassed to stand, bewildered, in front of the "feminism" section at Barnes & Noble, so I just bought "Backlash."

This website is all kinds of awesome. I'm so glad that people are teaching this early in the game; that being identified as a feminist isn't a negative thing, and that's theres no reason to feel ashamed about it. I fully support F-bomb.
