I have to say the bias at gawker and jezebel against Israel...and at times, the Jewish people in general...is pissing me off. There is about 0 cultural sensitivity. You can't say "eat a sandwich," but you can shit on someone's religion. Nice.

@mischiefmanager: What part about our ancient religion isn't primitive? And it just so happens that this is a ritual only done by a mere fraction of Jews. My comment speaks more to the common theme that runs in gawker and jezebel - Israel sucks, Jews are weird. I'm over it.

The boy behind them has the longest peyos I have ever seen.

PETA actually launched a campaign in Hassidic neighborhoods in Brooklyn to try to change this tradition to giving money. As far as I can tell, it's not being real well received...a lot of people feel it's a threat to their traditions.

@mermil: Then PETA should rethink its campaign. I'm sure a Hasidic woman, naked with cash on her ladybits, should work. The tag line could read:
"Cash covers my sin better than chickens."

@LaComtesse: Just because a woman is naked doesn't make it sexist, and they have used naked men in their campaigns, too. Using sex for advertising might not be your cup of tea, but it isn't automatically sexist any more than photographing a naked person for art is.

That joke anti-Semitic, plain and simple. I can only hope the person behind it isn't.

@roxythekiller: Yeah. I'm sorry you feel hurt, but you've taken this totally out of context. Perhaps you should look up some of the PETA tags on Jezebel- there's a pretty clear prevailing opinion of PETA's work on this site, and the joke was most certainly a reference to that. If you read the other articles, there's a lot of precedence for PETA jokes.

I read about this tradition in The Year of Living Biblicly! That's how I learned 99% of what I know about Jewish culture, since I was educated at Catholic schools.

Also, I just listened to last year's Thanksgiving episode of This American Life, all about poultry, and now I can't see a chicken without thinking it's magical.
