That's terrible news, Yma was the queen of Exotica music. She was far greater than Martin Denny and Esquivel. I'll raise a Mai Tai in her honor tonight.
I'll admit: I only knew of Yma Sumac via a comment made by Spike on Buffy about demons "making like Yma Sumac". But now I want to go get some of her music, that voice is unreal!
I am delighted to find kindred spirits on Jezebel who appreciate Yma's unique gifts and wonderful kitschiness. I have worshipped at the altar of Yma since I was in college. One of her songs is featured in The Big Lebowski (the party at Jackie Treehorn's where the half-naked woman is being bounced around on the trampoline). Her MAMBO! album is instant party fun!
@Doreen DelPurgatorio: I didn't know I'd actually heard her music before, but I remember that part of the Big Lebowski, and also, Black Eyed Peas sampled that "Bo Mambo" on the "Elephunk" album.
I had never heard her music until I heard about her death last night on NPR and they played some of her songs - her voice and her singing reminded me of the blue alien Diva that comes out in the Fifth Element. Amazing, amazing....
