Yeah, school meals need to be healthier, but even if they were (based on what I saw on my own time and now with my younger brother) I doubt many of the kids would eat them. Good eating habits begin at HOME.

@Rare Affinity: FWIW, when I knew her, she had almost no contact with Montel Williams. He is her father biologically, but that doesn't mean he has anything to do with her.

I last saw her two years ago, so maybe things have changed, but I doubt it. Her parents weren't together.

I hope they do make school lunches healthier. However, given the sorry state of elementary education in many neighborhoods getting some textbook and making sure 4th graders can read is also important.

I feel the two go hand in hand. It's hard for Jane and Johnny to focus in class when they are eating nothing but junk.

An expat blogger in Le Marche. Italy posted a typical weekly school lunch schedule for an elementary public school in her area. Tons of veggies, some fish, of course pasta, plenty of fruits, etc.

Then she posted the lunch served at her old school back in the States. Lots of processed and fried foods and no veggies or fruit.

@nyc-caribbean-ragazza: Here in the UK Jamie Oliver has been running a huge campaign to improve school meals to make them healthier.

I don't know if there's more veggie options or not, but it has been hugely successful even though costs have gone up.

I was just thinking about my school lunch options when I was a kid and, even if vegetarianism was not an issue, they could definitely stand to be healthier. The hot lunch was usually something with a cheese sauce or fried dish (fish patty, chicken patty, mac and cheese, etc.). You could get a peanut butter sandwich on white bread as an alternate selection. The snacks available included chips, pretzels, soft pretzels, and nachos. Soda machines were outside of the cafeteria for our use. I think they added a side salad as an option my senior year, but the "salad" was like 3 lettuce leaves with two tomato wedges on top.

I am glad this girl is using her energy to do some good.

When I was in middle school, I wrote a letter to Chelsea Clinton when her dad was first elected (we are around the same age, give or take a year or two), essentially offering to be her best friend. I lived in DC at the time. She never wrote back. Chelsea, the offer still stands.

we had an open campus in high school. So yeah I had the ability to go home and eat a healthy, well balanced meal but i usually would hit up Sonic for a coke and a burger.

I have two young cousins who have been forced to be vegetarians since birth, and they are two of the weediest, sickliest looking children I've ever seen. I don't think children should be forced to be vegetarians. I think they should make that decision for themselves when they are old enough.

By the way, I'm a vegetarian, too.

@Mrs. Stephen Fry: I had a friend who grew up eating almost all meat dishes, and she was also sickly looking. Perhaps they aren't getting the proper nutrition, but that can fall on either side of the spectrum.

I've never had a piece of meat in my entire life, and I am a-okay.

Any parent is technically "forcing" the kid to eat a certain kind of diet, as they are the ones preparing the food.

I don't think children should be forced to eat processed fast food products, but unfortunately many are.

I went to public school in NYC so lunches were always $1 (or free if you qualified). And yes, they were disgusting and processed and greasy and the best you could really hope for was that they MAYBE had pb&j, so I'm all for overhauling.

As long as they can find a way to do it without raising prices. Which, I don't know if they can

Even at my college, our vegetarian options are severely limited. This is, primarily, due to our size (~300 students), but it was enough to make me stop being vegetarian.

When my brother was vegetarian in middle school, they tried to give him just a hot dog bun on hot dog day. He was displeased, to say the least.

@spiraloflife: My college was also small (I think 700 students when I started) and we had a big problem trying to get more choices. Most of the foods were not even labeled, which I pointed out was an issue for people with allergies and diabetics (e.g. the ice cream that had nuts in it). I think being at a smaller school made it more difficult to make changes.
