I swear, I learn so much about the lives of women from Jezebel. I have become THE GAY to talk to at cocktail parties thanks to all the things I've learned reading this blog.
Yay, Jezebel! Servicey in ways you don't even realize.
I had a genuine DVF wrap back when I was in high school and wish I'd kept it, but I had to safety pin the top to keep it from gapping. I have a Monsoon wrap dress that I bought in Waterloo Station that I adore; I've worn it regularly for two years. It isn't a tie wrap, but a faux wrap, and I wear a cami under it. Great with boots.
The belt always looks funny on me, and my boobs are almost always falling out. It just looks like I am going to perform in some weird porn set in an office with a tall, chubby, busty girl (yours truly) starring.
@Ski Bunny?: a faux wrap (Boden sells a lot of them) is a much easier cut to wear.
@velcrosneakers: I get great tanks at H&M that provide more cover. They're $7.99 each. You have to hunt for them, but they're usually in the back of the store where the workout clothes live.
Gotta disagree with you, Sadiekins. (and everyone else, it seems.) I'm really curvy with c/d boobs and I live in DVF wrap dresses. However, I've found that almost everyone (except those built straight up and down) need to get the dress 1 size bigger than usual. (I wear a size 12 in DVF, 8/10 in most other brands.) If you need a cami, I suggest one of the gap cami bras..they give you the coverage but not the bulk in the waist/back area. And ALWAYS with a slip. I think I need to start a BringBackTheSlip Revolution.
I bought a DvF wrap when I worked at Neiman's. Even with my discount it was expensive as shit but I had to have it. It's the black one with big white polka dots w/ short cap sleeves. I looooove wearing it cause it makes me look like I have this womanly figure which I absolutely don't have (except for the butt-definitely got one one of those). It makes me look really proportioned or something. My gripe is that there is not a single pair of undos that are not visible under it. Also with y'all on the overly deep neckline. I wore it with a red slip underneath, it works pretty well.
Late on this, but yes, total myth. Make you look lumpy and feel insecure, in my experience. If you have a killer bod, I guess they'd work - but then, what wouldn't?
I was contemplating the other day whether the wrap dress is now only a bigger-girls dress. Thanks to years of WNTW and other makeover shows we know a wrap print is flattering on a full figure, does a wrap now signal- yo, I'm big? I cannot recall seeing a small girl in a wrap dress.
PS- I am def. one of the big girls in a wrap dress here. 5ft4, 160 pounds.
I'm pretty short- and pretty lumpy- definitely booby- I love a wrap dress but the key is a *faux* wrap (well, semi-faux). Get one where one side is already sewn to the other so you just have one piece of fabric to pull around you. A full wrap dress, where only slippery jersey fabric knots and crossed fingers are keeping the contraption together is a recipe for a day of self-conscious clothes fidgeting.
Also, my favorite dress right now is actually from freaking Kmart. It's knee-length, black tough springy jersey, with 3/4 sleeves. It's got kind of a faux-wrap V-neck top. The V is trimmed with a one-inch swath of black velour, and there's a wide band of the same material around the ribcage. It also has a long wide velour sash that ties in back.
It makes no sense how much I love that dress. It makes my waist look teeny.
I did almost flash a boy I had a huge crush on when my wrap dress unwrapped itself while sitting on a bar stool, but...I love my wrap dresses! Two hints.
1. I buy spaghetti tanks at Zara's to wear under my wrap dresses. No plunging neckline, much more work appropriate, and you can pop the right color out of the dress.
I used to have a fantasy that one day I would be a proper grown-up and my wardrobe would consist of five of these + amazing boots. And I would never have to think about clothes again.

But curves + height + scoliosis + wrap dress = NO.
I would rather have a bunch of Vivienne Westwood off-the-peg frocks.
