Yeah, rly. Pugilistic or MMA violence is of the expected variety: Both parties know it's coming.

This violence was, in my mind, of a significantly higher order, involving true victimization.

As you may have guessed, the athletics department here at UNM is feeling a bit of heat. First our football coach punched an assistant coach. Then the football team managed to maintain a perfect record of 0-7. Now Ms. Lambert.

Soccer is definitely a violent sport, and the bad behavior is certainly not limited to women (anyone remember Wayne Rooney's "testicle stomping" last World Cup?). However, in my experience women are far more likely to use violence and cheating as a way to advance.

I was on a soccer team by the time I was five, and played co-ed and girls league soccer until college. Guys could definitely be violent, but the majority of the blatant, calculating violence was done by women.

My soccer career quickly ended because one game, a girl purposely stepped on my foot and didn't get up as I fell, literally snapping my ankle. She immediately started fake crying and got a foul called on me. So, yeah. Kind of bitter. Although I'm still a hell of a lot luckier than another teammate, who got her spine broken when a girl kicked her in the back when was on the ground. Compared to that, the ponytail grab doesn't look so bad! #elizabethlambert

@linnyt is a walking cliché: The refs during my high school soccer games were terrible at calling any of this stuff. They rarely ever called on the violence, which as my father pointed out on more than one occasion wasn't "aggressive play" it was assault. I still remember a game in which I spent most of the second half ( I was a goalie and rarely spent time playing the field) on the ground. I was pushed down, thrown down, yanked down, kicked, punched, etc. The refs didn't call a single one of them. I left that game bruised and battered. #elizabethlambert

@EkaterinaBallerina: I my mind it's all related to sexism. Most refs refused to believe pretty girls are agressive and/or can be violent. It's one of the reasons I think we need more women referees. And why I ref. #elizabethlambert

@EkaterinaBallerina: my worst attack was when a defender (bigger than me and quite muscular/strong) sat on my head on an astroturf field. 1. i was stuck under her and 2. the turf really hurt and scratched up my face pretty badly.
I also got hit in the face, right in the nose, with someone's wrist cast once. that could have been an accident but why did they let her play? it was dangerous. #elizabethlambert

@unionmaid: Wow good for you reffing. That's great and I totally agree.

We also believed that the refs were so slow to act because of the school we were playing. I won't say the name, but it specialized in students with emotional problems. Students that were already aggressive, angry and violent. Which throw in competitive sports and it's a pretty ugly few hours. In the 4 years I had to play them, I saw some of the worst behavior I've ever seen and it was rarely called or punished. Of all games to up the whistle-blowing, this would have been the one. But alas, the refs spent the whole time looking bored off their brains. #elizabethlambert

The hair pull down is the about the same as the sucker punch made by LaGarrett Blount of Oregon, which was national news for about a week after the fact. It will be interesting to see if the seriousness of Lambert's actions will diminish with time so that she might get reinstated, as it seems Blount will be let back on the team. #elizabethlambert

@nancydrewme: The difference is that the other soccer player wasn't taunting Lambert. The Boise State player was being a rude, aggressive jerk to Blount. (Not saying he deserved to get punched, but he shouldn't have acted the way he did.) #elizabethlambert

@nancydrewme: both guys deserve some blame in that situation. blount clearly shouldnt have punched #94, but #94 definately provoked blount.

#94 didnt need to say anything to blount, he went out of his way to specifically say something to him. frankly, he got what he deserved, they [boise state] won and he felt the need to rub it in his face. if someone is going to talk shit, they really shouldnt cry about it when they get punched for running their mouth. #elizabethlambert

A lot of that was way over agressive play, but the ponytail pull was ridiculous and should have gotten her thrown out of the game (I don't have the sound on, so I don't know if she was, but they didn't show video of the red card). All of that shit would get you at least a 15 yard penalty in football, where despite all the hitting, they do not take that stuff lightly. #elizabethlambert

My local morning news covered this (KTLA) and when they introduced the story, the anchor said, "I can't believe someone wrote this. 'We don't talk about women's soccer very often, so you know when we do, it's something big.' Why would someone write that?" Then they threw to a sports guy who said the fight probably started when one woman stole another's man and the anchor pleaded with them to stop being so sexist. They did the whole, "it's not sexist if it's a joke!" thing, then listed all the other recent incidents of male-on-male sports violence and announced that maybe women weren't that different after all.

The anchor, by the way, is Michaela Pereira. And she is awesome. #elizabethlambert
